The Bolivian national flower is in fact a particular variety of qantuta, the qantuta tricolor, which has red petals, a yellow floral tube and a green calyx, reflecting the colors of the national flag. Callicoma serratifolia is commonly known as black wattle. One explanation for the name is the similarity of the flowers to those of Australian Acacia, which are commonly known as wattles. Another explanation is its use in wattle and daub huts of the early settlers. The species has a number of other common names include callicoma, butterwood, silver leaf, silver-leaf butterwoodand wild quince. Black wattle can grow up to 20 metres in height, though in cultivation it is more likely to reach a height of between 6 and 10 m with a 3-metre spread. It has lanceolate or elliptic leaves that grow up to 12 cm long and 5 cm wide with coarsely serrate margins. Despite being native to the Americas, it is often called the African marigold. The Aztecs gathered the wild plant as well as cultivating it for medicinal, ceremonial and decorative purposes. The plant is sometimes completely waxy white, but often has black flecks or pale pink coloration. Rare variants may have a deep red color. The name "Monotropa" is Greek for "one turn" and "uniflora" is Latin for "one flowered" as there is one sharply curved stem for each single flower. The stems reach heights of 5–30 centimetres , sheathed with highly reduced leaves 5–10 millimetres long, best identified as scales or bracts. These structures are small, thin, and translucent; they do not have petioles but instead extend in a sheath-like manner out of the stem. As its scientific name suggests, and unlike the related Monotropa hypopitys (but like the close relation Monotropastrum humile), the stems bear a single flower 10–20 mm long, with 3–8 translucent petals, 10–12 stamens and a single pistil. It flowers from early summer to early autumn, often a few days after rainfall. The fruit, an oval capsule-like structure, enlarges and becomes upright when the seeds mature, at this point stem and capsule looking desiccated and dark brown or black.The seeds of M. uniflora are small, ranging between 0.6–0.8 mm length. Unlike most plants, it is white and does not contain chlorophyll. Instead of generating food using the energy from sunlight, it is parasitic, and more specifically a mycoheterotroph. Its hosts are certain fungi that are mycorrhizal with trees, meaning it ultimately gets its food from photosynthetic trees. Since it is not dependent on sunlight to grow, it can grow in very dark environments as in the understory of dense forest. The complex relationship that allows this plant to grow also makes propagation difficult. The flowers of M. uniflora are visited by various bee and fly species, most commonly bumblebees. Bumblebees are an important pollen dispersal agent for the plant. Like most mycoheterotrophic plants, M. uniflora associates with a small range of fungal hosts, all of them members of Russulaceae. It is often associated with beech trees. It was first described in 1901 by Édouard André. T. chantrieri is native to southeastern Asia. It is commonly known as the black bat flower due to its shape and coloring. The bat flower has unique pollination method in that it is mostly autonomous self pollinating. T. chantrieri prefers environments similar to its native region with tropical, moist conditions. The bat flower has been commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. There are ten species in the genus Tacca. T. chantrieri is often referred to as the bat flower, devil flower, or cat whiskers. It is an unusual plant in that it has black flowers. T. chantrieri has bracts that look like wings and are large in area. The flower can be up to 12 inches across. Its height can range anywhere from 50–100 cm tall. The bracteoles look like long whiskers hanging from a bat that can be 8-10 inches in length. Some researchers believe that the bracteoles have photosynthetic properties. T. chantrieri is found in Southeast Asia spanning regions in Assam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Southern China, Hainan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. It covers the widest geographical range of its genus. However, its range has been lessened due to overexploitation, habitat destruction, and forest fragmentation. T. chantrieri flowers from April to July. The flowering parts of T. chantrieri should be left uncut, if cut the flower will quickly decline. T. chantrieri will begin its flowering process after at least two leaves have grown. It can bloom up to 8 times in one growing season. T. chantrieri has similar growing conditions to Orchids. T. chantrieri is a geophyte, which means it contains rhizomes. T. chantrieri'srhizomes prefer a moist, tropical, and densely nutrient based biome. It can be both an in ground plant and a house plant, it flourishes in low to medium lighted areas. These flowers are mostly free from pest and disease; however, gardeners should be careful of slugs and snails. If the plant is indoors it needs to have a simulated humidity with regular misting.
