❓DID YOU KNOW XZ Backdoor Edition 👉 Over the Easter weekend a backdoor was identified in an open source project called XZ Utils. ”xz” is commonly deployed as part of most Linux distributions and used by lots of other software.

🧑‍💻 Did you know the backdoor grants an attacker the ability to execute custom commands and code via SSH? The attacker must supply a cryptographic key which is verified by the backdoor, after which their input is passed to system(). The security community continues to reverse engineer the malicious code so we do not yet have a full understanding of all the moving parts.

Ⓜ️ Did you know the backdoor was discovered by Microsoft software engineer? Andres Freund noticed some SSH connections were slightly slower (500ms) than usual and started investigating, culminating in the discovery.

🗜️ Did you know the backdoor targets OpenSSH but OpenSSH does not normally load the affected library (liblzma)? A common third-party patch used by several Linux distributions causes it to load libsystemd, which in turn loads lzma. 

📅 Did you know the final stages of the backdoor were committed late February and early March 2024? Only two affected versions were released, 5.6.0 and 5.6.1.

💳 Did you know the backdoor has been assigned a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures ID, CVE-2024-3094? Backdoors are also considered to be vulnerabilities as they allow unauthorized access to systems.

🔻 Did you know most Linux distributions and affected vendors have already issued advisories? The most common approach to solving the issue has been to revert to an older known-safe version of xz-utils.

Please review your environment for the affected software and downgrade XZ Utils to an uncompromised version—such as 5.4.6.
