As the future of the SEC mandatory climate disclosures for public companies in the US hangs in the balance, regulators elsewhere are pressing ahead with their own disclosure frameworks - many of which will affect US businesses.

Pollination's John Morton spoke this week with Elizabeth Meager at FT Sustainable Views about the SEC's rule. He says that claimants pursuing its withdrawal have missed the point.
 
“Companies that consider themselves satisfied if the SEC rule fails may have won the battle but they’ve lost the war, because they’re going to be disclosing in Hong Kong, Tokyo, the EU, Britain and California soon. What exactly have they accomplished? Now they’ll just have to disclose 15 different ways in other jurisdictions.”
 
“If you believe — which regulators do unanimously — that climate change represents an emerging and increasing risk to the stability of the financial system, then corporations need to disclose their exposure,” says Morton. “These claimants do not answer the question of how investors are supposed to allocate funds without this information.”

We are thrilled to announce Pollination is joining Arbor Day Carbon in a bold new global partnership to identify and develop tree planting projects that will produce high integrity carbon credits and deliver positive impact for climate and nature.

The Arbor Day Foundation will identify suitable afforestation, reforestation & revegetation (ARR) carbon projects across its global network. Pollination will onboard selected projects for funding, and will provide technical, regulatory and commercial project development support. The Foundation will also support the marketing of issued carbon credits for these projects.
 
Since its inception in 1972, Arbor Day Foundation has helped plant more than 500 million trees globally and helped hundreds of companies to achieve their climate goals.

The partnership draws on Pollination’s demonstrated ability to leverage global carbon markets to deliver climate and nature objectives as well as assembling and deploying finance for critically needed nature restoration.

“Amid the increasingly urgent fight against climate change, the Arbor Day Foundation is in constant pursuit of new ways to drive impact through reforestation,” said Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation.

Pollination Chief Investment Officer Diana Callebaut provides her insights to  World Finance Magazine for a special report on the growing trend of investing in climate resilience.

While climate investments seek to slow the pace of climate change, climate resilient investments focus on adaptation and mitigation of its impact. Both are needed to ensure a successful transition to the future #netzero global economy and both offer significant opportunities for investors.  

“Investing in resilient operations is critical for ensuring assets and investments are fit for purpose for the impact of climate change. There is no drawback for long-term investors and only benefits, ensuring assets are able to continue operations," Diana says.

“The prevalence of dedicated climate resilience private funds is relatively limited; however, there is a significant amount of investment on an asset look through basis in thematic and/or diversified private market funds. 

"For example, owners of infrastructure assets such as airports and ports are aligned with ensuring the longevity of their assets adapting to the impact of climate change."

Pollination is pleased to be a foundation member of the Singapore Carbon Market Alliance, which launches today.

High-quality carbon credits can support investments in emerging climate technologies and nature-based solutions and complement the decarbonisation strategies of companies to achieve their climate goals. 

Singapore is seeing increasing interest from companies in carbon credits to meet their global sustainability goals. Access to carbon credits will be especially important for companies in hard-to-abate sectors where low-carbon technologies need time to be commercially available.

The SCMA is the first platform in Singapore focused on high-integrity carbon credits that are aligned with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement – and the latest initiative to increase Singapore’s leadership as a regional node for carbon services and trusted carbon markets.

A joint initiative by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and IETA, the SCMA directly connects leading international suppliers and enablers of carbon markets to Singapore-based corporates with a demonstrated commitment to #sustainability and interest in high-quality carbon credits.

Erica will share her experience working as part of the Aboriginal Clean Energy Partnership, a unique collaboration between MG Corporation, Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, Kimberley Land Council and Pollination that is developing a visionary green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Western Australia’s East Kimberley region.

“ACE involves engaging Traditional Owners as shareholders not just stakeholders,” Erica says. “This is a model that is driving the success of the East Kimberley project, and we believe has huge potential to be more widely adopted across the resources sector in Australia.”

What role might voluntary biodiversity credit markets play in delivering the nature-positive transition? It’s a topic that is being keenly debated, even as such markets begin to take shape around the world.

Pollination Executive Director Laura Waterford told an audience of corporates and ecological practitioners at the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) National Biodiversity Offsets Conference that voluntary markets do have potential to help deliver the transition that’s needed, but it won’t ‘just happen’. 

"When it comes to the conference theme 'from offsetting to nature positive', those in this room are uniquely placed to help ensure that the emerging voluntary biodiversity credit markets can help to deliver positive outcomes for nature by drawing on their technical expertise and experience," she said.
