Aging is a natural process characterized by a gradual decline in our physiological systems. Over time, our cells lose their ability to proliferate, differentiate, and repair, resulting in sustained wear and reduced organ performance. In a recent study, scientists at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the University of Helsinki joined forces to investigate the relationship between age and obesity. The team integrated bulk and single-nucleus RNA sequencing data from subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) with genotyping data from the UK Biobank. They focused on age-obesity interactions originating from adipose stem and progenitor cells (ASPCs). Through comprehensive analyses, they discovered that obesity prematurely reduces the proportion of ASPCs. The team also identified 76 ASPC genes that are deregulated during aging, shedding light on the cellular and genetic interactions that regulate fat cell differentiation and link aging to obesity. This research highlights that understanding the complex interplay between aging and obesity may help us identify interventions to address obesity and improve overall health as we age.
