Early in my career, one client stood out among the rest. During our product design review meetings, the CEO of the company would often quietly sit in the back of the room. On more than one occasion, he would interrupt the meeting to challenge not just our team but also the decision-makers within his own company. He insisted that we share the story behind the product design. Initially, I was taken aback by his interruption. Eager to present the latest solutions, I wasn’t prepared for the shift and view the bigger picture from a higher altitude. But over time, I realized how crucial this exercise was to the bigger picture of product development. If we couldn’t clearly and compellingly communicate the 'why' behind the design, the customer wouldn't grasp the importance of buying the product. This experience taught me an invaluable lesson: the importance of having conviction in the product story. After all, a compelling story always includes conflict followed by resolution. Thinking About 3D Printing Rotors and Testing? Hint: FDM is Not the Best Solution. In a recent project involving a portable medical device, we had the opportunity to improve the centrifuge component of the device by modifying the rotor. This change would reduce the device's overall height and improve accessibility for the user to quickly swap vials. With time constraints pressing, we initially turned to FDM printing for rapid prototyping to validate the conceptual design. Despite knowing that layered printing is susceptible to delamination, we experimented with different build orientations. Our goal was to achieve five cycles at 6 minutes at 10,000 RPM using FDM prints. Significant layer separation occurred within just a couple of minutes. Regardless of the build orientation, all samples delaminated around the 2-minute mark, highlighting the anisotropic nature of the FDM process. Interestingly, the part measurements before and after spin testing remained within spec. As a backup process, we produced parts using Multi Jet Fusion (MJF). These MJF-printed rotors not only looked great but also outperformed our cycle testing constraints for prototypes. This test underscores the importance of understanding the strengths and limitations of different 3D printing processes and materials. FDM may be fast and convenient, but for high-stress applications like centrifuge rotors, it's worth considering more robust solutions like MJF. #Productdevelopment #3Dprinting #MJF #Centrifuge #MedicalDevice

Courtroom Recording Reimagined. Audio recording in the courtroom has largely been unchanged over numerous decades. Hesitancy to adopt new technology has stifled innovation in this industry. A3S sought to design a system that could be easily adopted and integrated for both courtroom audio recording and law enforcement interviewing/interrogation. Radiant explored and helped identify a product offering that emphasizes adaptability, ensuring it matches the necessary technology requirements for intended government institutions. Yesterday, I heard someone talk about Blue Monday. I have never heard of a Blue Monday before, have you? It's the third Monday of January and supposedly the most depressing day of the year. It's cold (at least for the dedicated Bills fans shoveling snow in Highmark Stadium). The holidays are over, some holiday debt is starting to surface, and for some, you may have already fallen off the wagon for New Year's resolutions. Wikipedia even shares a formula explaining why today is the saddest day of the year! Here are a few things to consider in the new year: LOWER THE BAR Feeling the resolution bar is too high, drop it down a notch. Don't get rid of the goal or resolution; just make the bullseye a little larger and keep moving forward! STAY ACTIVE. Move your body and get active to improve mood and reduce stress. The more I move, the clearer my mind gets. I live in Phoenix. There's no excuse for us who are blessed with this climate not to stay active! CELEBRATE THE WINS. If you have a win, small or large, in the first couple of weeks of this new year. Celebrate it! A win is a win. This is going to be a great, successful year!
