Women’s History Month is a powerful reminder of the many contributions women have made throughout history and the obstacles they have faced and continue to overcome. Women before me have shaped the current workplace, and I am grateful for the strides made to provide the opportunities I have today. We are now more encouraged to use our voices, be leaders and changemakers, and have a seat at all tables. I am inspired to continue being a part of the movement to improve workplace dynamics and environments for women.

My mother has always told me to stay true to myself, both personally and professionally. The more I've grown up, the more I've realized how important it is to stick to my values. I continually learn from her and admire her ability to remain true to herself in all she does.

I am inspired by my mother and all the women who came before me, who endured hardships in the workplace and fought for change. They are the reason workplace cultures have improved for women. I remember my mom telling me that unpaid time for maternity leave was hardly enacted when I was born, let alone companies having policies for paid maternity leave. Although there is more work to be done, I am grateful that I can be a career-driven woman today and am inspired by those who came before me.

Women’s History Month is important because it’s crucial to take time to celebrate the underrepresented stories of the past. It helps spotlight the need for equality among all gender identities. However, it’s not enough to have just one month to celebrate the contributions of the underrepresented because society needs help remembering that history isn’t singular; it’s plural, diverse, and complex at all times. I don’t know if being a woman in a professional setting that’s traditionally dominated by men has gotten easier since I started working, or if it’s me who has changed in how I address the attitudes and inequities. I’d like to think that it’s gotten better for all women, but I know my experience as a woman working in New York is very different from that of a woman working elsewhere. That being said, I’ve been at Raine for almost 8 years, and I’ve grown a lot as a professional during that time. Raine has provided me with support and encouragement to take on new challenges, and I believe that it’s also my responsibility to give back to my colleagues and nurture the growth of other women at Raine. Hopefully, it’s the right attitude to effect change for women around me beyond my individual experience.

It’s not so much the advice I’ve received, but the living examples of the women in my life that have helped to keep me on a forward-moving path. The advice I’d give to other women in my life is to take the time to know and understand your own desires and ambitions and revisit them regularly because it’s easy to get distracted by the wants and needs of everyone else around you.

The women closest to me have always been my biggest inspiration. There are many women in history and famous contemporaries who inspire me, like Jane Austen, Madonna, @Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Liz Cheney—all women who’ve challenged the status quo. However, it’s the women in my family, my friends, my professional life, who have inspired me the most. Two of my closest friends—one is a high school art teacher, and the other is a professional artist—are both strong, intelligent, creative, and compassionate individuals. They’ve given me invaluable guidance and support throughout my life, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without their examples.

Women’s History Month allows us to celebrate and recognize the achievements and struggles of women throughout history and in the workplace. It gives us the chance to shed light on the accomplishments of women that are often overlooked. In my own career journey, being a woman has made me more aware of the need to break down gender barriers and as a woman of color, I actively try to create a more inclusive and diverse workplace that can help us bring unique insights and perspectives and contribute to a more innovative work environment.

The best career advice I have been given was to maintain curiosity. Fostering a genuine passion for continuous learning and exploration has helped me to continue to strive for more professionally, be creative, and adapt to an ever-evolving world, while also continuing to develop and grow personally.

I am most inspired by my mom, Dr Tanya Carter. She is the embodiment of resilience and determination and is a pioneer in the world of Optometry by being the first Black professor at SUNY College of Optometry. Through her legacy, she has taught me not to shy away in the face of opposition, to believe in my abilities and be my own advocate.
