Realta Fusion is an early-stage spin-out from the University of Wisconsin-Madison developing the lowest capital and least complex path to commercially competitive fusion energy. 
We are applying advances in super-conducting materials, plasma physics, and computing power to a simple linear fusion reactor configuration. These advances allow for a much lower capex power plant, utilizing abundant fuel sources to provide a new, zero-carbon source of heat and power.

Meet Timmy Bui, Fusion Research Intern with Realta Fusion! Timmy is pursuing his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Physics - Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Coming into his summer internship, Timmy thought he would be primarily using his physics skills, not anticipating the importance of how quickly he developed critical engineering skills that can be applied to any future position. Timmy summarizes his intern experience: “Now that I’ve lived in the world of physics, every physics experiment needs a building team and engineers. I respect those who can get their hands dirty and turn wrenches.” All of us at Realta Fusion are proud that Timmy was a part of our team, and we wish him our very best!!

Announcing TWO new INFUSE partnerships for Realta Fusion with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Berkeley Lab (LBNL) to help us develop fusion enabling technologies. With ORNL we will work on how to pump liquid metal single-coolant lead-lithium around our simple, linear magnetic mirror fusion energy system. We'll avail of LBNL's expertise in modeling to simulate steady-state neutral beam injectors - a key component we will need for reliable "always on" power plants.

WHAM but not whamageddon...Amazing tour of the  University of Wisconsin-Madison Physical Sciences Lab as part of the TOFE conference! We even managed to see one of their first shots ever using the new high strength Commonwealth Fusion Systems magnets (that only arrived 2 weeks ago) in conjunction with Realta Fusion. Thanks Mason for the insightful tour, was incredible.

University of Wisconsin-Madison has achieved a “major milestone” in an ongoing #energy research project, announcing its #fusion device has generated #plasma for the first time. 

Plasma is superheated material that’s often referred to as the “fourth state of matter,” distinct from solid, liquid and gas, according to an overview from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
 
Much like heating a liquid will change it into a gas once it’s hot enough, heating a gas will lead to the formation of plasma. Importantly for the field of #fusionenergy research, matter heated to the temperatures required for this goal takes the form of plasma, the overview notes.
 
The UW-Madison research team has spent the last four years building and testing a fusion energy device known as the Wisconsin HTS Axisymmetric Mirror, or #WHAM. Last week marked its transition to official operations mode, and UW-Madison Prof. and project leader Cary Forest said generating plasma is “a crucial first step” toward the goal of #decarbonizing the energy sector.
