The new minimum operational record set in Queensland this week is further proof that energy storage is now, more than ever, required to absorb excess solar or other renewable energy and provide long-duration energy storage (4+ hours) to shift the power into peak time’s providing dispatchable load for the grid. Redflow ’s zinc-based long-duration energy storage is the perfect solution to support a renewables grid.

🔋Batteries, and more specifically flow batteries, are now being recognised as playing a crucial role in supporting the NEM in the morning and evening energy peaks. Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) ’s new report noted a near doubling of battery dispatch during morning and evening peaks, and across all hours. This trend is set to increase as we move to a renewable grid, and flow batteries are the perfect energy storage solution to mop up the excess solar for use later.

California continues to be at the forefront of growth in global energy storage and Redflow is proud to be working with the California Energy Commission on a number of long-duration energy storage projects in California. California is at the epicenter of global demand for long-duration storage. This week’s announcement by the California Public Utilities Commission proposes the procurement of over 10 GW of new energy resources (that do not use lithium-ion) including 1 GW of multi-day long-duration energy storage (LDES) and another 1 GW of 12-hour-plus LDES. Mark Higgins Redflow’s CCO said, “Redflow has a strong track record in delivering behind-the-meter microgrids in California for critical infrastructure which has put us on the radar of those looking at long-duration storage. Redflow and Stanwell Corporation Limited held the first project meeting this week, kicking-off work on the feasibility study process which represents the first part of the recently announced MOU. Redflow will collaborate with Stanwell as part of our X10 product development process to design a pilot BESS for deployment at Stanwell’s’ Future Energy Innovation Training Hub (FEITH). Redflow CTO Steven Hickey recently visited our factory in Thailand where we have been working on improving electrode efficiency and performance. Joseph Chacko has been overseeing the improvements and was an excellent support during their factory visit.
