We invest in B2B and B2B2C in Supply Chain, Distribution, Logistics, Transport, and related Fintech.

In emerging markets, consumers spend up to 80% of their disposable income on basic necessities.  We invest in the companies that get those necessities to consumers more quickly, more efficiently, and at lower cost.

These markets are going mobile first.  A Mozambican trucker will not buy a smart phone to play Angry Birds but he will buy one so he can book a return load and avoid an unpaid trip hauling an empty trailer.  We have seen how these technologies revolutionized business in China and are disrupting huge industries in India.  Other emerging markets are following the same path with local variations and we invest in the companies that are riding that wave.

We invest thematically - we find a good model and then invest in multiple markets. For example, in  FTL Trucking, we invested in Truck It In (Pakistan), CARGON (the Caucasus), appload (South African Development Community), and Kamion (YC S22).  In bus ticketing and seat inventory management we invested in Jatri (Bangladesh) and T40 Technologies (Nigeria).

All these companies have grown significantly since our initial investment.

Reflect Ventures is pleased to announce its investment in the $1.5 million pre-seed round of tappi, founded in 2022 by Kenfield Griffith and Louis Majanja.

The startup is bringing Africa’s micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) into the digital age, starting in #kenya and #nigeria and aiming to eventually expand across all of Africa.

We are delighted to co-invest alongside Digital Currency Group, Resilience17, growX ventures, and Orbit Startups. 

The round also saw contributions from angel investors and advisors from global tech companies, including Google, Salesforce, Zendesk, and the financial sector.

The early-stage funding will further enhance Tappi’s mission to empower SMEs to gain visibility and build trust in the digital commerce ecosystem as the startup broadens its footprint across Africa.

On a continent where 90% of businesses are MSMEs, their ability to succeed is highly dependent on capturing and retaining customers who are increasingly transacting online.

However, the vast majority of MSMEs don’t have the skills, knowledge, tech infrastructure, and financial ability to make this transformation happen on their own.

In partnership with major Telcos, Tappi is digitizing African businesses by providing them with mobile-driven digital marketing and sales tools to reach, understand, retain, and optimize their customers.

Tappi offers MSMEs optimized business landing pages, social and credibility scores, seamless WhatsApp payment integration, and intuitive CRM, social media, and operations management tools, with more tools to come.

“With a seasoned team of second-time founders at the helm, an MIT PhD CEO, a unique customer acquisition model, and shareholders, including institutional VCs along with individual investors from companies like Google, Salesforce, and Zendesk, we believe Tappi has the potential to transform economic activity on the African continent,” said Michel Friedman, Partner at Reflect Ventures.

Everything old is new again - Zimbabwe is returning to the gold standard!

Zimbabwe is launching a new currency for the sixth time since 2008. The new currency, the ZiG, is supposed to be 100% backed by gold reserves. The problem, of course, is that after so many episodes of hyperinflation and bills that are more valuable as toilet paper than currency, who is going to believe Zimbabwe’s government on this? Zimbabwe will almost certainly print more ZiGs than it has in gold reserves, and this currency will fail too. The ZiG will ZaG.
