Sophie is a Waste and Circularity Expert and joined us at Resourcify earlier this year. 

Hailing from Northern Germany, when she's not enjoying nature, trying new foods in the kitchen, or spending time with loved ones, Sophie is busy supporting our Sales team in the WMS (waste management system) business unit. She has a natural talent for connecting with people and has a passion in communication.

💭 "A big tip that I would give to everyone alike who wants to pursue a career in Sales, is to not fear rejection. It’s a huge part of working in sales, and whilst it can be frustrating, you have to remind yourself to not take it personally. 👋 Goodbye to the old ways and hello to the new — this is a rare time where we're all for letting something go completely

The word "waste" often carries a negative image—think garbage, rubbish, trash or even hazardous material. It's something we’re eager to dispose of, often willing to pay just to see it gone.

But what if waste is only waste because we’ve labeled it that way? We think it's about time to break free from this outdated, linear thinking.

Inspired by the work of Fagariba and Song (2016), we’ve reimagined their infographic to align with our vision.

For years, the traditional waste hierarchy was driven by an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality and it shaped our waste management strategies. We then shifted into the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" model, and whilst this has made significant strides, the challenges we face today demand a more innovative approach.

Enter the new waste management paradigm: a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond simply managing waste to prioritising and redesigning systems that prevent it entirely. This forward-thinking approach embraces circular economy principles, emphasising waste reduction from the start and fostering innovation through sustainable product design, zero waste initiatives, and resource efficiency.

But why is this shift critical?

🔄 Circular Economy: Transitioning from a linear "take-make-dispose" model to a circular one keeps materials and products in use for longer, reducing our dependence on finite resources and minimising waste.

🚫 Waste Prevention: By focusing on eliminating waste at the source, we adopt a far more sustainable approach than dealing with it after it’s created.

🌱 Resource Efficiency: Innovation in product design and manufacturing drastically reduces our environmental footprint, conserving the planet’s precious resources.

🍄 Could plastic-eating fungi be the game changer in the fight against plastic pollution? 

🇩🇪 Scientists in Germany have discovered fungi that can break down synthetic polymers, offering a glimmer of hope for reducing the millions of tonnes of plastic waste polluting our oceans every year.

Research at Lake Stechlin has shown that some microfungi can thrive on plastics as their sole carbon source, with a few strains proving particularly "hungry" for materials like polyurethane. However, the challenge remains, as other plastics like polyethylene and microplastics from tyres are much harder to degrade.

While this discovery is promising, scientists emphasise that it’s only a small piece of the puzzle. Reducing plastic waste at the source is still crucial.

💰 The estimated cost of climate change by 2050 is expected to reach up to 900 Billion Euros. Will you business costs be part of the statistic? 

Of the DAX companies analysed in our recent Resourcify's Sustainability Index, an impressive 70% recycle over 50% of their waste. Leading the way in recycling rates are industry giants BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz AG-Benz, and Porsche AG, each boasting outstanding recycling rates of over 95%. 🚀

On the other hand, 69% is the average recycling rate for DAX companies.

DAX 40 companies must provide their investors and the public with annual insights into key figures and measures. For the Resourcify Sustainability Index (RSI), we analysed these reports, focusing on content, language, and recycling metrics to give a comprehensive overview of sustainability performance.

This week we want to pick your brain and gauge your thoughts on the EU's Green Claims Directives.

🌱 If you haven't heard of it before, the Green Claims Directive aims to prevent companies from misleading consumers with false environmental claims. The proposal sets out minimum standards for how companies should prove and communicate their environmental claims, making these green claims reliable, comparable and verifiable across the EU.

It's part of the European Green Deal – a set of policy initiatives by the European Commission with the overarching aim of making the European Union's climate, energy, transport and taxation policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels, and climate-neutral by 2050.
