I drove back to Wales on Friday, via a refuel at Heathrow, from the wonderful Blue Earth Summit with one big idea resonating in my mind. Economist Ralph Chami pointed out that the market value of living things is a new concept to economics. Traditionally, when economists talk about the value of living things, they actually mean value-in-death. The tree when you've felled it for wood. The cow when you've killed it for meat. Until we fell it or kill it, traditional economics doesn't recognise any value in it. In hindsight a blinding glimpse of the obvious! Ralph Chami is not only Assistant Director at the IMF but is also founder of Blue Green Future . This foundation has calculated the value-in-life of a great whale as $2,000,000 – in carbon sequestration, impact on fisheries and tourism – but only $40,000 once dead – in blubber, oil and whale bone. Here is an economist talking about the real, tangible market value of living things in life. This is not to ignore the enormous intrinsic value of all living things that any sane person will intuit – but it is important in getting political and commercial interests to take biodiversity seriously. Unfortunately, rubber tyres play a direct role in the decline in ocean health, its ability to sequester carbon and the future of whales – their nutrition, health, fertility and thus numbers. Microplastics reduce the population of phytoplankton that feed the whales (so abundant that they’re responsible for half the planet's limestone!), the Coccolithophores so beloved of the late great Dr. Stephan Harding. We generate more than 500,000 tonnes of tyre particulates in Europe each year, much of which ends up in our oceans – 78% of the microplastics entering oceans are from tyres. These emissions are pro rata to vehicle mass, which is why we are working so hard to keep our cars as light as possible. Stephan contributed so much to our understanding of the intrinsic value of all living things and the sheer scale of carbon uptake that dwarfs any technofix that we can dream up – we've just got to get out of the way. We must recognise both economic value and intrinsic value. That is why we’ve designed our Future Guardian governance model to recognise and give voice to each core stakeholder, including the environment, that create the conditions for Riversimple to thrive ... as John Muir said, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.” Blue Earth was a 3 day extravaganza that brought together a great bunch of people really doing something – amongst them many Riversimple investors, friends and supporters.
