Since Nicolas Viglucci, Senior Software Engineer, joined Rivian in 2020, he has sought out spaces that excite him and would help grow his knowledge and expertise. Interning with powertrain, developing software for test and integration, and now programming for the Low Voltage Energy Management team  – Nico has found the space and support to always renew passion in his work and continue to grow.

“One thing that I really appreciate is that at every development conversation, and even most of our one-on-ones, my manager asks me, ‘what new stuff do you want to be working on?’ Is there anything else you're interested in? Is there anything I can do to help you move into some new project or role that you might be more interested in? I'm really thankful that she explicitly makes the space to talk about that.”

He recalls a recent conversation with his manager that bolstered him. “My interests have always lied, not just in software, but also in controlling and testing mechanical or physical systems. So, even though I was really enjoying my #software role,” Nico told his manager. “I would really like to get more into designing cross-functional features. Without hesitation, she said, ‘Okay. That’s a great idea!’ and connected me to projects that would provide me greater exposure and stretch my skills.”

“It’s been my experience that there’s freedom here to challenge yourself and to take on new responsibility,” explained Nico. “People are very willing to give you ownership over new and expanding projects, but then it's really on you to execute and get that feature working once you own it. It can be a lot of pressure, but it's really fun because you get to learn a lot more than just what's within your role. I think it’s an understated benefit, but what a job should be, right?”

“Looking back on it now, bringing all the teams together and balancing all their different requirements has been fascinating. I've learned a lot about other parts of the vehicle that I would normally not have exposure to, and I’ve gained leadership skills that I didn’t expect to naturally come along with this role. Overall, it’s been a really fortunate change in my mindset.”

It’s these simple but meaningful conversations that have become the basis for a new trajectory for Nico and given him opportunities to grow in his role. "Amazing leadership, seemingly endless projects and questions to solve... I'm just excited for what's next," Nico smiled.

Jen joins Rivian with over 20 years of business, marketing, product and operations leadership experience. She has spent the past three years as the VP, Global Marketing for Meta leading a team of product marketers and general managers across the Reality Labs portfolio with products including virtual reality, augmented reality, extended reality, Portal and Metaverse. Prior to this role, Jen served as Amazon's Global head of Marketing, Growth & Customer Engagement for the Fire TV business.

Please help us welcome our newest class of 26 to the Rivian Technical Trades Program for Stanton Springs North (SSN) - our future manufacturing site in #Georgia.  
 
The Rivian Technical Trades Program will provide these students with an accelerated 16-week foundational training program. Upon instructional course completion, they will receive on-the-job training and learn valuable skills from professionals in our manufacturing facility in Normal, IL. Upon graduation, they will return to Georgia to deploy their expertise in our new manufacturing hub. “This is a very exciting development,” said David Stevens, Director of Maintenance at Rivian. Especially since the employees of this inaugural cohort will be “some of the very first who will eventually call the new Stanton Springs Plant their home.” 
 
Having launched the Rivian Technical Trades Program in 2021, our first cohort of employees are already contributing to the R1 line in Normal. “This innovative program is in partnership with Georgia’s technical college system,” says Arnhelm Mittelbach, VP of Manufacturing, “and we’re looking forward to a long-term partnership in the community as we work towards production in Georgia.”

At our #Atlanta service center, the team feels like family, but for one duo, it’s quite literal. Mother and daughter, Wajiha Ali and Rasheen Henry, bring the family dynamic to life at Rivian and get to change the world together.
 
Back in 2021, Rasheen began her career at Rivian as a Vehicle Operations Manager and helped launch the opening of our Atlanta service center. When asked what led her to Rivian, she remembered the words of her late father, “be good.” “My dad would tell me, ‘be good’ on my way out the door to school. That was his way of saying ‘I love you’ to our family.” Rasheen continued, “His words inspired me to find work that would be fulfilling on a deeper level...I think I've found that ‘be good’ feel at Rivian. Here, I’m able to help tip the scales in the world’s favor and ultimately leave it better for future generations. What’s better than that?”
 
After a few months of hearing about Rasheens’ work, her mother Wajiha was inspired to apply and eventually joined a separate team as a Senior Field Delivery Guide. The Field Delivery Guides are responsible for delivering vehicles to our customers, educating them on product features, answering questions and ensuring a great customer experience. Rasheen is a part of the Vehicle #Operations team, which focuses on the vehicles themselves. She ensures the logistics of getting customer vehicles to the correct location, carries out pre-delivery inspections and a smooth process for the customer. Despite being on separate teams, these two roles rely on each other to achieve the common goal of a successful vehicle #delivery.
 
In the Summer of 2023, both Wajiha and Rasheen were promoted to new roles: Wajiha to Lead Field Delivery Guide and Rasheen to Sr. Area Vehicle Operations Manager. Rasheen shares, “What’s most rewarding is being able to see my mom get promoted. You want to see the people you know and care about do well. I appreciate that there aren’t any barriers to working for the same organization. That’s allowed me to see my mom’s growth and development.”
 
Having worked together twice before, they’d learned to keep their mother-daughter relationship close to the chest, but at Rivian, something was different. "Here, the walls come down," Rasheen confided. "I can celebrate Mom's achievements without reservation, a privilege I haven't enjoyed elsewhere.” Wajiha chimes in, “And I get to see how she impacts her team and the people around her. It’s refreshing!” She jokingly added, “It just goes to show you that I am fabulous and raised a fabulous daughter.”

For the last two decades, Rodney Francis has dedicated his career to manufacturing. He started out on the supplier side of the automotive industry before joining Nissan, where he spent almost seven years as Director, HRBP and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. He initially joined Rivian in California before relocating to our plant in Normal, Illinois where he is the Director of People and the Executive Sponsor of one of our #Belonging Resource Groups [BRG], Black at Rivian.
  
“What I’ve enjoyed so far about my journey at Rivian is that I have the freedom to be creative and find solutions. In terms of Rivian’s People Operations, we talk a lot about how we are building the plane as we are flying it: We are adapting and iterating every day. At Rivian, you have the freedom to be creative and to make things better. I would go so far as to say it’s expected of you. That is why I wanted to be the Executive Sponsor of the Black at Rivian BRG. The way I see it is, if you’re not working to find solutions, you are part of the problem. 
  
Being Executive Sponsor of the Black at Rivian BRG allows me to shine a light on the challenges our community faces and to think about ways to showcase Black talent. Hiring is just one piece of the puzzle – retention is just as important, so we spend a lot of time at Rivian talking about how we can retain Black talent. All employees deserve the same opportunities to grow and develop, but it’s about equity; employees are all different and may require different support. If you’re a leader in an organization, you are called to lead everyone, so educate yourselves on how to lead diverse talent. Ask employees what they need. Listen and learn. Understand the concept of equity; sometimes it’s not about giving two employees the same training program (excluding certain mandatory training that is required of all employees or for certain positions, of course!), but instead understanding what each individual needs to do their job well.   
 
There is a tendency to disassociate ourselves from things that don’t impact us, but I’m asking people to find empathy for underrepresented folks because they experience the workplace differently than you. Can we challenge each other to do better?  
  
I will never stop doing this important work because I think about that 10-year-old kid who will be entering the workforce a decade from now and I don’t want them to have the same challenges I did. And I am grateful to the people who came before me who ensured that I’m here being part of the solution for the next generation. I can’t pay you back, but I can pay it forward.”

Software can only be as creative as the developers behind it, so, we sat down with our Infotainment, Camera, Imaging, and Vision (ICIV) team to get to know their team dynamic and how they created some of our most distinctive R1 software features.

Part of the fun of working at Rivian is getting to think about how to do things differently. Gear Guard, Rivian’s always-on, camera-based smart security feature, is one of the innovative #software systems this team has worked on and offers a window into the supportive and playful way this team operates. Aruna Baijal, Senior Computer Vision Engineer explains, “When we were coming up with ways to test the Gear Guard feature, we ended up living all our James Bond dreams and held contests to see if we could fool the system and steal something. We even tried jumping into the vehicle from a fire escape above it! Our team is creative and playful and I think that aspect shows in the final product.”

These sophisticated software systems are only possible when teams work well together. “When trying to come up with solutions or new features, our team values input from each member and encourages bouncing ideas off each other,” said Aruna. “I can't emphasize enough how open and supportive our team is. You can pull anyone into a meeting with you just to voice your ideas or if you're stuck, then to hear someone else's point of view. It doesn't matter what post you hold. Good ideas can come from anyone, and the team recognizes that.” Anagha Kate, Sr. Embedded Engineer, Camera Systems, echoed this sentiment adding, “I know I can go to someone’s desk and ask questions about #code knowing they’re open to sharing and that I won’t be left out of important conversations. I am an equally valued member of the team.”

This team stands out within Rivian for its strong gender diversity, boasting one of the highest female-to-male ratios. Having been with this team for over two years now, Aruna shared that “this has genuinely been the first team I have been part of – as an engineer and a woman – where my input is valued every step of the way.” This sentiment resonates throughout the team, with Arabhi Harave Shantharamu, Team Lead, Camera and Computer Vision, stating, "Seeing the world through diverse lenses strengthens our vision. With varied perspectives, we challenge assumptions, uncover blind spots, and ultimately design products that are more intuitive, inclusive, and impactful.”

When it comes to team growth, "we look for people who can see the bigger picture – someone who can take a step back and understand the vision holistically,” said Arabhi.
