Did you know that Salvia started with nothing more than innovative ideas and a blank whiteboard?

Salvia BioElectronics was founded on March 3, 2017 by Hubert Martens, Daniel Schobben and Wim Pollet. The founders (with extensive backgrounds in medical technology and neuromodulation) started their journey by understanding the needs of patients and healthcare professionals, building a team and conceptualizing the first shapes, characteristics and functionalities of a neuromodulation solution for people with migraine.

𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐚 - "My job is to make sure everything runs smoothly in the operation." - Meet Frank van Wijk, Operations Director at Salvia BioElectronics.

"As a child, I grew up with cars," says Frank. This passion led him to study Mechanical Engineering and Transport Technology at the Eindhoven University of Technology. It wasn't surprising that he did an internship at vehicle manufacturer DAF Trucks NV in Eindhoven. 

But it wasn’t his only passion. Frank's career took a significant turn when he switched to the medical device industry. Moving from large machines to the smallest of sophisticated devices, he spent the next 25 years at Medtronic. Starting as an R&D engineer, he eventually became Director/Site Leader for CardioVascular. He led a team of cleanroom engineers and operators, conducted studies and managed clinical products, including implantable devices for the heart, nerves and muscles. "When I started, Medtronic had 10,000 employees. By the time I left, it had grown to close to 100,000."

Frank then took on roles as VP of Operations and Director of Operations for several companies, including those that made catheters and pharmaceutical packaging. He found himself back in factories with huge machinery, reminiscent of his early days as a mechanical engineer. "At the pharmaceutical packaging company, we were like a bakery," he says. "There were 10-meters-high 'mixers’, 'ingredients' going in, forms being 'baked'- and at the end all packaged in very clean Class 5 cleanrooms."

This year, Frank began his new role as Operations Director at Salvia BioElectronics. "Our goal is to reliably deliver our innovation to patients currently in clinical trials. My focus is on in-house manufacturing, infrastructure and supply chain." Frank compares his time at Salvia to his early years at Medtronic. "Salvia feels like those early years at Medtronic, where you really get to know the company inside and out, working closely with the product, make a difference for the patient and help the organization to grow."

Reflecting on his journey, Frank says, "It's nice to look back on the kid who liked cars so much. If I could have imagined back then that I would have so much responsibility in developing products to help people, I would have been amazed. It makes me proud.”
