Another Kind of Automation

After completing her studies in Design and Product Realisation at KTH in Stockholm, Evelina Dannert chose to participate in Scania's Graduate Engineer Program, aiming to gain a comprehensive understanding of the company. Within just a few months, Evelina has not only learned extensively about Scania but has also discovered the groups and roles where she excels. "Exploring where I fit best within the company and identifying where my strengths are most effectively utilized has provided me with invaluable insights, which would have otherwise taken years to acquire," she reflects. 🌟

Throughout her three rotations, Evelina has held positions as a Logistics Developer, Process Engineer, and is currently in a role within Sales & Marketing. "The opportunity to alternate between production and logistics has been fantastic, as these functions need to collaborate closely. Gaining experience from each perspective has already enhanced my capabilities as an engineer," she explains.👩‍🔬

Managing three rotations in six months requires both curiosity and motivation, and for Evelina, these rotations have been ideal. As she embarks on her third and final rotation, she highlights the significance of building connections across various parts of the company and values the relationships formed with the team of graduates she joined the programme with. "The programme is shaped by what you and the group make of it. I have thoroughly enjoyed it!"

Scania Innovation Factory opens up creative pathways open for Scania employees to develop entrepreneurial competencies. We speak to three of our enterprising colleagues to find out what this means to them.

Xinxing Guo is a Business Developer working with project Manta which matches truck owners whose trucks are sitting idle with truck users who need trucks as a temporary solution. “I'm drawn to this kind of environment that encourages creativity and a problem-solving mindset. The company backs this project and I feel the security knowing that I’m not personally liable for the high risks of running an entrepreneurial startup," he says.

While in the SmartTrash project, Shayan Aghaei puts his vehicle engineering skills into research exploring the implementation of an 'on-demand' refuse collection system using sensors and artificial intelligence. He thinks it’s fun to explore the unknown and learn a lot. Now his team gets the chance to transform an idea into an actual product. 

Emma Lindgren is investing her broad knowledge of Scania in the ReRULe project that focuses on circularity for components' end-of-life. She feels the programme increases her innovative curiosity and sets demands that propel her forward. “I have learned a lot about myself and I’m discovering new entrepreneurial skills that I want to develop,” says Emma.

Stig Hoffner is a loyal LKAB worker who loves his job so much that he doesn’t want to retire. Why? Because he gets to drive Scania's electric truck every day! 
Since late 2022, LKAB has used the truck at their iron ore mine in Malmberget and it has exceeded their expectations. The Scania 25P XT all-electric heavy tipper can carry 49 tonnes of load and transports residual products.

Scania and LKAB are both in industries that are shifting to become more sustainable. They have partnered to use electric vehicles in LKAB’s mines, a move towards greener transport for this sector.

As a recent graduate in engineering, Eros Costa found his passion in the industrial sector. He was excited about exploring various roles while continuing his educational journey, making the Graduate Engineer Program (GEP) at Scania an ideal choice for him. Reflecting on his decision, Eros shares, "Joining the programme was a decision I'm very happy with, and I feel privileged to have been among the selected participants."

The programme, enriched with lectures, activities, and visits to different Scania production units, also includes three job rotations, each lasting two months. This structure not only provided Eros with practical skills but also helped him build a substantial professional network, aspects of the programme he greatly appreciated. "The journey has been really fun and rewarding, contributing to my growth both professionally and personally," he says.

While the primary goal of the GEP is to prepare participants for roles within the company, Eros highlights another significant benefit: forming connections with fellow participants, who have become more than mere colleagues to him. Eros recommends the programme to anyone with a curiosity and passion for engineering, concluding, "The GEP is an excellent way to kick start your career in production and logistics. Moreover, Scania stands out as a great tech company, offering a numerous of professional development opportunities."

Sama Dawod, a Mechanical Engineering student, had a wonderful experience with the Scania Internship Production programme (SIP) and was so pleased that she applied for a second year in a row 🌟 We asked her a few questions about her internship and this is what she had to say:

Why did you choose to apply for a second SIP?
“I learned so much about Scania’s unique production during the first SIP, and I wanted to dig a little deeper into Scania as a company. It is a great summer job that also adds value to my CV.”

What was different from the first year?
“The first summer, we were a group with much support from dedicated mentors and managers. But in the second SIP, I have worked more independently with assignments. I felt very professional when I presented my report at the end, where I made suggestions for actions and a new standard. It was very satisfying.”

Do you have any recommendations for students that are curious about Scania’s SIP programme?
“Don’t be shy, grab the opportunities presented to you! People at Scania are very helpful and encouraging, and I plan for a third round in another department. If you are up to the challenge, the SIP will guarantee a boost in your career.”
