𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝!

🎉 6+ years of production and 949 mirror substrate blanks later, we’re very proud to announce that we have wrapped up our ZERODUR® production for the M1 main mirror of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)! That means that the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is one step closer to realizing their visionary telescope, which will be the world’s largest optical/infrared telescope when it sees its first light in 2028.

🔭 This production was a project of incredible scale for us, as it is the largest single order of ZERODUR® glass-ceramic in our company’s history. It has also been incredibly meaningful for us to produce the mirror substrate blanks for a telescope that will help astronomers investigate the origins of distant galaxies, search for extrasolar planets, and probe the earliest stages of the formation of planetary systems.

🙏 To celebrate this special occasion, our CEO, Dr. Heinricht, welcomed some special guests at our headquarters in Mainz, including ELT Programme Manager Roberto Tamai, Matthias Steinmetz from the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam, and representatives from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to mark the occasion together with our ZERODUR® team. We would like to thank our partners at ESO for a great collaboration over the years, the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung for their support of science projects like this one, and our team of 100+ across so many departments who dedicated their time and hard work to making this achievement possible!

Lift-off for a next-gen weather satellite! 🚀

Yesterday, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration successfully launched GOES-U, their cutting-edge weather monitoring satellite, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Built by Lockheed Martin Space, GOES-U is the latest environmental satellite in the #NASA / #NOAA GOES-R series, which will monitor atmospheric conditions and solar activity from geostationary orbit some 22,300 miles from Earth. It will deliver incredibly detailed images of our environment, oceans, and weather, and will even provide real-time mapping of lighting strikes. ⚡

💡 Fun fact: our glass-ceramic is enabling GOES-U in its solar activity monitoring! GOES-U's Solar Ultraviolet Imager instrument is an extreme ultraviolet telescope which will monitor the Sun’s outermost atmosphere. SUVI’s optical elements are made of our ZERODUR®, which is used in many space missions because of its high thermal stability and robustness. By monitoring solar EUV emissions not visable from the ground, SUVI will help scientists detect things like solar flares or coronal mass ejections, which can impact the geospace environment.

We’re excited to announce that the 2024’s Otto Schott Research Award goes to Prof. Setsuhisa Tanabe, an esteemed researcher from Kyoto University. 🎉 Congratulations, and thank you for your great work!

🔬 Prof. Tanabe is recognized by the Ernst Abbe Fund, which grants 25,000 euros biennially to pioneering #glass researchers, as a “leader in the international field of doped active optical materials”. Besides his far-reaching scholarly impact, he has made long-standing contributions to training and education in Japan and internationally.

👏 “We are honored to recognize Professor Tanabe’s long-standing and influential work in glass science ,” said Dr. Matthias Mueller, our Head of R&D and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ernst Abbe Fund, who had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Tanabe in person at our headquarters in Mainz, Germany. The pioneering research of Prof. Tanabe has influenced also several of our R&D team’s important product developments, especially in advanced optical glass.

🏆 The Otto Schott Research Award is named after our founder Otto Schott, who developed ground-breaking glass solutions for #optics, #pharmaceuticals, and many other technical applications and is credited as the inventor of specialty glass. Managed by the Association for German Science (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft), the award has recognized leading researchers around the world since 1991.

🏭 An evolution in manufacturing gives rise to a revolution in #AugmentedReality.

We’ve been tweaking and perfecting the entire manufacturing process for producing Lumus Ltd. reflective #waveguides for #AR glasses since the ignition of our cooperation several years ago.

Starting at the very beginning with a block of optical glass in Europe to producing proof-of-concept prototypes and engineering samples in Southeast Asia – this complex process involves coating, stacking, slicing, precision polishing, bonding, and final assembly. 🧊🧑‍🏭

Every step of the process is geared to produce augmented reality glasses that are not only best-in-class from a performance and wearability standpoint, but manufacturable at industry scale. 👓

Recently our CEO Frank Heinricht traveled to China, which is one of our strategic focus regions. “It’s been a while since I last traveled to China to meet with our colleagues and valued customers, so this was a very special trip for me,” Frank Heinricht said. “I'm excited to see how we will jointly progress our business in the region.”

Together with the management team from our Suzhou plant, he met Wei Mao, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of Suzhou High-tech Zone, and discussed industry trends as well as opportunities for future collaboration. The meeting highlighted our commitment to supporting the transformation and advancement of China’s industries. 🤓

Our CEO also joined Jocelyn Jiang, Sales & Marketing Director of the business unit Tubing in China, Albert Chen, General Manager of SCHOTT China, and Mark Jiang, Sales Manager of business unit Advanced Optics, on a few customer visits. They visited the Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics & Technology (NIAOT), a national research organization under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a crucial partner for our business. Our collaboration, particularly with SCHOTT ZERODUR® glass-ceramic, has played a pivotal role in advancing numerous astronomical projects initiated by NIAOT. 📡

The only explanation he’d give was that he was “working on something VERY big” and that it had to do with “sustainability, responsibility, environment-ability… ALL OF IT!”
