Founded in 1980 by German-born Walter Schug —  after a pioneering winemaking career at Joseph Phelps — and his wife Gertrud, the winery is now led by their children Axel, Claudia and Andrea. German-American winemaker Johannes Scheid brings modern touches to the family’s century-long European winemaking tradition, which emphasizes balanced wines that respect and represent their terroir.

Over 100 years of family winemaking 🍇 Schug Carneros Estate Winery carries the torch for European-style Pinot Noir, shaped by its Germanic heritage and Sonoma’s windswept Carneros terroir. The Schug family's winemaking roots extend back to the 1920s in Rheingau and Pfalz, both regions renowned for Pinot Noir. But Walter set his sights on California and, after stints at E&J Gallo and Joseph Phelps, founded Schug Winery in 1980. He and his wife Gertrud, also a winemaker’s daughter, have helped to build the reputation of Carneros as a source of quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, and contributed to its establishment as an official AVA in 1983. Today their children, Axel, Claudia and Andrea, continue the Schug legacy, along with winemaker Johannes Scheid from the Mosel Valley. The wines are famously terroir-driven and restrained, whether it be classic estate-grown Pinot and Chardonnay or more unusual additions such as St. Laurent and white Pinot Noir.
