Why do our breeders travel to the seed production areas? ✈️ 

3️⃣ Our breeders do not only breed for characteristics that are interesting for the beet grower, but they also make sure that the seed production characteristics are as optimal as possible. 👌 This is especially important for the seed processing afterwards. That's why they select lines with high seed yield potential and a high degree of monogerm flowers. 📈

The produced aphids 🦗 that transmit the yellowing virus are now being carefully placed in the field. The sugar beet plants they will infect will soon be extensively examined in the field and in our laboratories. 🔬 With that data, our breeders can then work to find a genetic solution 🧬 to the yellowing virus.

Why do our breeders travel to the seed production areas? ✈️

2️⃣ In the seed production fields the breeders can study the quality of the seed productions themselves. 🕵️ For example, they can check if the pollinator is healthy, doesn't flower too late and produces enough pollen. 📈 If there are indications that pollination is not going well, the breeders will keep this in mind during the winter when they draw up the breeding programs for the following year. 🗃️

💡 Did you know that at SESVanderHave, we also test new technologies and seed treatments extensively in the field? A team goes to the field during the emergence period to count the small beet plants. 🌱 For example, a plot is even counted 4 to 5 times to see the evolution in emergence. 📈 With that info, we can select the best candidates for the next steps in the process! 👌

At SV, we focus on the health of our plants and future seeds every day! In our SESVanderHave Innovation Centre, for example, thousands of leaf samples 🧫 are taken every day for careful examination in our laboratories. 🔬 Thanks to innovative biotechnology methods, we can even completely dissect the DNA 🧬 of the sugar beet to conduct more targeted research into diseases, for example. In this way, we can deliver healthy seeds that contribute to plant health in the field. 🔵

🌱 Marcel Brandt of SESVANDERHAVE shares his insights 🌱

Continuing with what we've always done is no longer an option. As regulations on herbicide use tighten and the consequences of climate change become increasingly visible, the time to restore our soil and nourish our plants better is now.

Marcel Brandt, head of the multiplication department at SESVanderHave, sheds light on the pressing need for change. "In the 1960s, farmers began plowing and reworking the soil to increase yields, unwittingly setting in motion a slow process of soil degeneration," Marcel explains. "Today, we're feeling the consequences of this degradation more than ever."

💡 By shifting our focus from treating symptoms to addressing root causes, Marcel believes we can cultivate healthier plants, better seeds, and more resilient agriculture. SESVanderHave has already begun experimenting with innovative methods, showing promising results. However, the transition to healthy soil doesn't happen overnight and can lead to yield drops.

🤝 With Seedshift, he hopes to bridge the gap and facilitate a transition that aligns with both soil health and economic sustainability.

Did you know that we also test our sugar beet seeds for their sowability? After all, those pretty little blue pellets 🔵 produced in our factory not only have to be of high quality, they also have to be able to be sown evenly. 🚜 Therefore, we always test this beforehand in our "test lane", where we have a whole range of sowing discs specific to different countries and markets. During these sowability tests, we verify whether our seeds are sown regularly and without problems. Or in other words: without breakage, doubles or gaps in the row. 👌
