In a world that is 2°C warmer, an additional 189m people will face hunger. In a 4°C warmer world, an additional 1.8bn people will go hungry.

🌊 Colombo's wetlands play a crucial role in making the city livable, providing essential services to every resident.  

In 2018, Colombo received the Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation, highlighting the importance of these wetlands. As the city prepares for the renewal of its status this October, it's essential to reflect on Colombo's progress in integrating wetlands into the urban landscape.

💸 Global commodity prices have decreased; however, grocery store costs remain high. 

Farmers are receiving less for their produce due to lower #CommodityPrices and increased expenses, according to International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)'s Joseph Glauber. 

Energy and labor costs contribute to the limited benefits for consumers in Europe and the US. Farmers in many regions, without government support, continue to face challenges.

🔍  A wi-fi powered analysis helps researchers analyze the impact of COVID-19 on Hanoi’s wet markets during the first stage of the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Traditional markets are the main source of fresh food and nutrients for people in Hanoi. But because of their informal nature, it’s difficult to track food flows and the impact of shocks, such as pandemics. 

In a new study, researchers from Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT drew on anonymized data from 549 million Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide, providing a unique perspective on behavioral changes from July 2019 to November 2020. 

"This approach allowed us to count the number of people present without compromising individual privacy. It's a powerful tool for understanding societal shifts," says lead author Louis Reymondin.
