PKI in IIoT secures & manages device authentication at scale 🔐 But how exactly does it work? 👇 PKI, short for Public Key Infrastructure, is a framework that manages the generation, distribution, and revocation of encryption keys and certificates used for secure connections and device authentication. PKI plays a critical role in securing IIoT and IoT applications by providing: 🔹 Root certificates issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) 🔹 Device and certificate management throughout the lifecycle 🔹 An interface for IIoT devices to securely enroll, renew, and revoke certificates So, how does this work in practice to secure IIoT applications? 1️⃣ The Root CA issues an intermediate certificate to the server or system that needs to validate and authenticate IIoT devices (e.g., Azure IoT Hub, AWS IoT Core, MQTT brokers, OPC-UA servers, or SQL databases). 2️⃣ The IIoT device authenticates itself to the PKI, typically through a birth certificate (initial device identity) or a secure passcode using the PKI’s API or client application. 3️⃣ The PKI issues a device certificate based on the Root CA. This certificate enables the device to authenticate itself to the server or system that holds the intermediate certificate from step 1. 4️⃣ The IIoT device connects to the server, which validates that the device certificate originates from the same Root CA. ✅ A secure connection is now established between the device and the server, allowing for encrypted data exchange. Why does this Scale better than adding certificates from factory? 🔸 Compliance with security standards: Certificates are regularly renewed with the latest encryption protocols. 🔸 Centralized management: Devices and their authentication status can be managed centrally, enabling secure, large-scale deployments. 🔸 Dynamic deployment: Certificates are deployed only when devices are activated in the field, simplifying setup. 🔸 Flexible access control: PKI can issue certificates with restricted access to specific servers or applications, enhancing security. What happens when my certificate expires in the field? ⌛ Before expiration, the IIoT device requests a certificate renewal from the PKI. As long as the device's access hasn't been revoked, a new certificate is issued, keeping the connection secure.
