The escalating #mpox outbreak is raising alarms about a potential multi-country epidemic or even a new pandemic. This year alone, over 17,000 suspected cases have been reported across Africa, predominantly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, underscoring the critical importance of a unified global response to combat the spread. In this JAMA publication, senior scholars from Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security examine the current global governance framework for a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), assess the mpox outbreak in Africa, and underscore the urgent need for countries to take swift action in response to this international call. Since the World Health Organization declared #mpox a public health emergency of international concern ( #PHEIC ) last month, two people traveling to Africa – one from Sweden and one from Thailand – have become infected with the clade Ib virus and brought it back to their home countries.
