We received a #supplier award in the Fearless Organization category for our resolution, rigor, and transparency in addressing Ferrari's challenging technological needs in developing battery cells for the automaker’s most powerful sports cars since 2019. On Monday, June 24th, SK On signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ExxonMobil for a lithium offtake agreement as part of its efforts to strengthen the #battery supply chain in the U.S. Through the collaboration, SK On will be able to secure up to 100,000 metric tons of lithium from ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions project in #Arkansas. 

SK On plans to use the supplied lithium for its battery manufacturing across the region. The company currently operates two electric vehicle battery plants in Commerce, Georgia, and is building four plants in #Tennessee, #Georgia, and #Kentucky through joint ventures with global #automakers. 

Park Jong-jin, Executive Vice President of Strategic Procurement at SK On, stated: “SK On has been working with global partners to secure key battery raw materials in a move to support our growing U.S. manufacturing base and lead #electrification. With Exxon Mobil, we will continue strengthening battery supply chain in the U.S.”

SK On and a research team from the The University of Texas at Austin, led by late Professor John Goodenough and Professor Hadi Khani, co-developed a new type of polymer electrolyte called #SIPE (Single-Ion conducting Polymer Electrolyte) for lithium metal batteries that can operate at room temperature. SIPE has high mechanical durability and thermal stability, which make it suitable for mass production and withstand high temperatures. Applying SIPE to next-generation batteries will help improve charging speed and low-temperature performance.  

Kim Tae-kyung, Head of the Next-Generation Battery Center at SK On, said: "Following this accomplishment, we expect to accelerate further the development of solid-state batteries utilizing polymer electrolytes. SK온이 텍사스 대학교의 고(故) 굿 이너프 교수 및 그의 제자인 하디 카니 교수 연구팀과 상온에서 구동 가능한 리튬메탈 배터리용 신규 고분자 전해질 ‘SIPE (Single-ion conducting Polymer Electrolyte)’를 개발했습니다. SIPE는 높은 기계적 내구성을 갖춰 대량 생산이 가능하며, 우수한 열 안전성 덕분에 고온에서도 견딜 수 있는데요. SIPE를 차세대 복합계 고체 배터리에 적용하면 충전 속도는 물론 저온 성능을 개선할 수 있을 것으로 기대됩니다.

A little while ago, SK On executives and employees came together for a town hall meeting. With our culture of transparent and open communication, the gathering was filled with inspiration - reflecting on what we have accomplished together and discussing the future we envision. Chey Jae-won, Executive Vice Chairman of SK On, shared: “Since our establishment, we have overcome difficulties every year and grown rapidly,” and added, “Electrification is irresistible trend and future. We will continue solidifying our capabilities and gear up for what's ahead of us.”

Ferrari, an iconic global brand, has an unrivaled reputation for producing sports #cars that thrill both on and off the track. SK On was proud to announce last week a continued partnership with Ferrari to explore new possibilities to advance cell technology for #ElectricVehicles.

SK On and Ferrari signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their existing collaboration. SK On has supplied #battery cells to Ferrari since 2019 for several vehicles. These include the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), the SF90 Stradale, and its open-top variant, the SF90 Spider.

This evolving partnership is exciting news for SK On, Ferrari and #automotive enthusiasts around the world. It’s also an exciting development in SK Group’s #sustainability mission – applying #clean technologies to all areas of the auto industry. 

As SK On CEO Lee Seok-hee commented: “Combining expertise and technologies from the two companies, we expect to provide customers with new experiences and values.”
