What does Trump’s second term mean for the future of AI legislation? 🇺🇸 🤖 In the United States, the complexity of federalism has always made it challenging to implement a unified AI policy. Currently, there is no overarching AI Act. The closest initiative is President Joe Biden’s executive order (EO) on the ‘Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI,’ issued on October 30, 2023. With Donald Trump now elected as the 47th U.S. president, big changes in AI policy might be on the horizon. During his campaign, he stated that he would dismantle the 2023 AI Executive Order (EO) established by Biden on day one. "We will repeal Joe Biden’s dangerous Executive Order that hinders AI innovation and imposes radical left-wing ideas on the development of this technology. In its place, Republicans support AI development rooted in free speech and human flourishing.” What will happen exactly or what will come in its place when Trump enters the Whitehouse is still unclear. However, based on the critique and earlier statements around AI legislation, a “light-touch” regulatory approach is to be expected, with reduced federal intervention, boosted R&D investments, and hopefully also a cautious eye on AI’s risks.
