Mike Shatzkin passed away this morning. Mike was such a bigger than life person that it’s impossible to believe that he's is no longer here. He was truly one of a kind—a person whose warmth, laughter, and deep intellect could light up any room. He changed my mind (a lot). Changed our work enormously. The analytics for the company that Sourcebooks has become started with the "Shatzkin Reports." He changed the very field of books. Mike had this wonderful way of challenging our thinking with a twinkle in his eye, of making bold predictions but always staying open to any new data. And at the heart of it all you would hear about Martha, his true love, and periodically about baseball (and the stats thereof) or more recently about climate change. And as Michael Cader said this morning in Publishers Lunch "While he had solutions and answers for almost anything, perhaps more significantly he asked great questions that always made you think more deeply." To me and so many others, Mike was more than just a friend. He was a guide, a confidant, and someone who inspired us all to be bolder, to think deeper, and to dream bigger.
