Prof Ramesh Chand, member Niti Ayog gave an insightful J Raghottam Reddy memorial lecture organised by Farm and Rural Science foundation on 3rd April in Hyderabad. The topic of the lecture was ‘Indian Agriculture: Achievement, lesson learned and way forward to sustainable food systems. The lecture was well attended by people from all walks of life, Political leaders, Policy makers, Acedemia and Industry leaders. Some of the takeaways were 1. Agricultural output has been growing @4% per annum since 2010 and can continue to grow at this rate for another couple of decades. 2. Agriculture has become quite diversified. The share of Livestock in total production has risen from 17.2% in 1951 to 36.9% in 2021, similarly the share of Horticulture sector has risen from 7.8% to 30.8% and fisheries from 0.6% to 6.2%. 3. Nothwithtandung the occasional blip we are moving into a surpluses as far as cereals are concerned and we need to find markets to export the surplus. 4. Demand driven diversification is the best source of growth and increased income for farmers. Some of the States in South and West have clearly demonstrated this. 5. MSP encourages growth in areas where the gap between potential and actual yields is significant not in areas where yields have plateaued. 6. Sources of future growth - Yield gaps - Crops and livestock - Diversification - Harnessing the irrigation potential - Using modern technologies 6. Promote scientific natural/ sustainable farming.
