New Lifters and the Bench Press by Phil Meggers, SSC "If you are a new lifter (or perhaps you’re coaching one), you may notice two interesting phenomena regarding your bench press. First, there’s a chance it might be heavier than your squat for your first few workouts, which may seem odd given that your legs and hips are much stronger than your arms and shoulders, and second, your bar path may be rather wobbly at first. Let’s examine these phenomena in turn and also discuss how we can improve these situations."

"Yield strength, therefore, is clearly more relevant than ultimate tensile strength in the context of barbells. The UTS indicates nothing about the performance of the barbell for strength training. Some argue that the UTS tells you about the bending of the barbell. This is false. The bending of the bar is only a function of the five factors previously listed. "So How Lean Should I Be? The million-dollar question that many want the answer to. From a health risk standpoint, between the actuarial data and epidemiological studies that followed up, it appears that the relationship between BMI and health risk presents a U-shaped curve. This means that if you are extremely underweight or extremely obese you likely need to gain or lose weight, respectively. Any risk with the overweight category (BMI 25-29.9) essentially disappears if you are physically active with a similar trend in the class I obese category (BMI 30-34.9). A common error in the snatch is entering the final phase of acceleration early, at the mid-thigh "jumping position" learned for the clean. This leaves the bar far from the body as the pull is finished.
