When looking at the dominant forms of government in the past century, countries with autocratic regimes were in the majority for the longest time. A downward trend in autocracies only began after the end of the Second World War, accelerated by the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Since then, the two variants of government have been in a neck-and-neck
race and were almost equally split in 2022.

A rise in populism and eroding trust in established democratic parties are likely to have contributed to halting the downward trend of autocracies since the beginning of the current century. Populism is commonly defined as a certain understanding of politics that is characterized by the idea of a "true people" on the one hand and "corrupt elites" on the other.
Our World in Data, from which the source material for this week’s Racing Bars was gathered, distinguishes between four different forms of regime. The first two are closed autocracies and electoral autocracies, summarized in the animation as "autocracies", which differ in one key aspect. In closed autocracies like Saudi Arabia and North Korea, there are no significant parliamentary or presidential elections. In electoral autocracies, elections are held but potentially manipulated and obstructed by the incumbent government. This can take the form of suppressing the opposition and the press. Egypt, Singapore and Hungary are among the countries counted as electoral autocracies.

Democracies can be split in two sub types as well. In liberal democracies, free and fair elections are held, while the separation of powers and rule of law principles guarantee citizens extensive freedoms. In addition to Germany, this also includes countries such as Australia, South Korea and the Seychelles. This form of government has come under particular pressure in recent years, while the number of electoral democracies and closed autocracies has increased. In electoral democracies, governments are also elected, but they only partially fulfill other criteria. For example, there may be a lack of effective separation of powers, supervisory bodies or civil liberties. Examples of this are Poland, Mexico and Senegal.

In 2022, the average quarterly U.S. household spending on plays, theater, opera, and concerts amounted to $79 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a drastic increase both compared to pre-pandemic levels as well as to 2020 and 2021. While this evidence is anecdotal, it suggests that either Americans are willing to spend more on live entertainment or costs for such events have risen by such a degree that could explain the spending jump. Whichever reason might be true: The live industry is back from its coronavirus slump, at least in terms of the volume of concerts, festivals and other cultural live events booked. PwC noted in their latest Global Entertainment and Media Outlook that in 2022, live music generated $20 billion worldwide, while cinema box office revenues stood at $25 billion.

A recent Statista Consumer Insights survey shows that when it comes to choosing where to buy a ticket for an event, a majority of U.S. Americans surveyed favored Ticketmaster. 61 percent of online event ticket buyers had engaged in business with the platform, which was merged with Live Nation in 2010 and has recently come under anti-trust scrutiny due to the problems with the pre-sale of Taylor Swift's Eras tour in 2022, in the past 12 months.

Ranking second and third are Eventbrite and StubHub with 33 and 29 percent, respectively. The former company was founded in 2006 and went public in 2018, while the latter is not a first-party seller but rather a ticket exchange and resale platform which has also come under scrutiny for sellers buying up tickets in bulk and reselling them for highly inflated prices. Of the eight most popular ticketing websites, five are at least partially in the ticket reselling business, with SeatGeek offering up tickets directly from the venues and organizers as well as resale tickets.


Boeing’s deliveries of commercial aircraft have faltered in the first three months of the year, according to the company’s reports, published yesterday. The U.S. aircraft manufacturer delivered just 83 planes in Q3, down from 130 in the same three-month period of last year. In the meantime, its sole major competitor, Europe’s Airbus Aircraft, saw an uptick in Q1, having delivered 142 of their planes, marking an increase from their Q1 2023 figure of 127.

Boeing has been mired in a series of safety issues since the start of the year, following a mid-air panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 jet in January. This has led to a slowdown in production for the U.S. company, which is now limited to producing 38 of the 737 planes per month until it is clear that quality and safety procedures are being properly adhered to, as per the advisory of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Boeing has slowed production even below this limit, with the company’s Chief Financial Officer Brian West stating that once the company has it “right” it will ramp up production, expecting to see figures improve in the latter half of the year.

Prior to 2019, Boeing had been in the lead for deliveries out of the two companies, but this changed following the two deadly 737 MAX 8 crashes of 2018 and 2019, and the ensuing temporary production halt of the model. While the same family, these were different planes than those involved in the more recent incidents and they were caused by different issues. As the following chart shows, both companies saw dips in deliveries in 2020 with the Covid pandemic.

Boom phases in the development of artificial intelligence, such as the victory of the chess computer Deep Blue over at the time world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1996 and 1997, have been around for decades. However, none have piqued the interest of investors and big tech companies as much as the current one. This wave of AI investment began with the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT, a direct-to-consumer application based on the GPT language model.

Critics see this type of artificial intelligence as little more than "stochastic parrots" that put together words and sentences according to statistical probabilities. AI evangelists, on the other hand, champion ChatGPT as the first big step towards a true "Artificial General Intelligence" that could exhibit the same cognitive abilities as a human. Companies and investors aren't afraid to spend big to accelerate this development.

As an analysis of the 100 most promising AI start-ups by tech market research company CB Insights shows, OpenAI raised around $14 billion in capital through partnerships with Microsoft and other investments, and its potential market capitalization is currently estimated at around $80 billion. Anthropic, the company behind ChatGPT competitor Claude, is in second place with around $4.2 billion, while the big data analysis platform Databricks ranks third with approximately $4 billion. In terms of current valuation, the U.S. company comes in second with $43 billion, a figure that none of the other entrants in the top 8 can match.

Another striking fact: Seven of the eight best-funded companies in the top 100, selected by CB Insights based on "deal activity, industry partnerships, team strength, investor strength, patent activity, and proprietary Mosaic Scores", are based in the USA. The sole outlier, Mistral AI, a French company founded just a year ago by former Meta and Google DeepMind employees, has already raised $544 million in capital in less than twelve months. Looking at the complete line-up, a total of 69 of the top 100 AI startups are based in the USA, followed by the United Kingdom (7), Canada (5), Germany and France (3 each) and China (2).

Although the market does not yet seem to believe that the AI boom will fizzle out any time soon, some of the most vocal critics predict a crash in the near to medium term. Even the companies investing in AI are now skeptical. According to a report by tech publication The Information, decision-makers in companies such as Amazon and Google urged their marketing departments to promote AI less aggressively to their corporate customers, as the ubiquitous hype would mask the high operating costs and the results would be less revolutionary than hoped.
