Stephen Industries is a family owned investment company based in Helsinki, Finland. We fund companies creating innovative Healthtech, Deeptech and Greentech solutions for a better world.

Our vision has been simple since day one: to be the best in the world in what we do. The drive for excellence is deep in the nanofibers of our company.

For the first 30 years, Stephen Industries operated as an industrial holding company founded by serial entrepreneur Kustaa Poutiainen. Our journey towards global success started with subsidiary Picosun – a deep tech company that specializes in atomic layer deposition, founded by Kustaa in 2004.

Throughout the years, Kustaa raised several rounds of growth capital, growing Picosun to over 50 million euros in annual revenues. In June 2022, Picosun’s stock was sold to US-based technology giant Applied Materials Inc. The sale of Picosun catalysed a change of Stephen Industries’ operations, transforming Stephen Industries into an ambitious and experienced investment company in late 2022. In addition to Picosun, we’re currently best known for the central vacuum cleaner manufacturer Puzer and tech ventures such as Hycamite, TILT, Sooma, Fiberwood and Stemsight.

We are proud to announce our continued investment in Fiberwood Ltd as part of a recent €7.7 million growth funding round. This investment reaffirms our dedication to promoting innovative solutions that are crucial for ensuring a sustainable future in construction and packaging.

Fiberwood, a pioneering Finnish materials technology startup, is making strides with its environmentally friendly insulation and packaging materials derived from forestry side streams and other natural fibers. These products are not only recyclable and resource-efficient but also stand as economically viable alternatives to materials such as mineral wool-based insulation (construction) and cellular plastic-based packaging cushioning (packaging).

The new funding will empower Fiberwood to perfect its product concepts, ensure scalability for industrial production, and enhance their international presence. We are excited to support Fiberwood’s journey as they gear up for commercial launch and continue to lead in materials technology innovation.

🌱 Green News from Stephen Industries! 🌱

We are thrilled to announce our latest investment in NPHarvest, a CleanTech spin-off from Aalto University. This Finnish startup is making a splash with its innovative nutrient catcher technology, designed to recycle nutrients from wastewater—transforming waste management and supporting sustainable agriculture in one go.

With a €2.2M raise led by Nordic Foodtech VC and including participation from Maa- ja vesitekniikan tuki ry and us at Stephen Industries, NPHarvest is set to bring their first commercially ready Nutrient Catcher to the market. 

Excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, in our waterways lead to severe environmental problems, including eutrophication. Additionally, nitrous oxide, a byproduct of excess nitrogen, is a highly potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 265 times that of CO2 🔥 

NPHarvest’s system not only captures up to 90% of excess nutrients from wastewater, thus helping fight eutrophication and global warming, but does so with minimal energy use, addressing critical environmental challenges while promoting recycling in the fertilizer industry.
