Surgery Hero is a digital clinic that helps people prepare for and recover from surgery at home. They offer whole-human support before and after surgery, focusing on behavior change therapy to influence surgical outcomes. Members access personalized programs via the Surgery Hero app and are paired with expert human health coaches to turn knowledge into action.

You wouldn’t run a marathon without putting in the training - surgery causes high levels of physical, mental and emotional stress and yet people are often turning up with just an overnight bag.

Research has shown that people who undertake preparation for surgery are likely to have a lower risk of surgical complications, faster recovery from surgery and a lower rate of re-admission. Sometimes, preparation for surgery can help a person avoid surgery altogether.

With that in mind, we’ve built Surgery Hero around the principles of behaviour change therapy. We offer whole-human support before and after surgery to ensure that our members have the opportunity to impact their own surgical outcomes.

👥 Partnership Focus:
Together, we aim to provide specialised prehabilitation health coaching for individuals awaiting pelvic exenteration surgery: a major operation to remove multiple organs in the pelvis. 

💡 Why Prehabilitation?
Improved patient care and outcomes is always our key aim. Surgical prehabilitation through our programme has shown huge benefits towards patient outcomes, including reduced risk of complications, reduced length of stay and improved patient activation levels. 

On an individual level we know this is particularly important for patients going through major surgery so they can return to normal life as quickly as possible. 

In addition, there are major cost benefits for the hospital, wider healthcare teams and employers!

We are thrilled to share that a groundbreaking study, just published in the British Medical Journal BMJ, outlines the remarkable success of our partnership with Surgery Hero at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust  🏥💙

Led by Professor Gerard Danjoux, the study assesses the influence of digital prehabilitation on the outcomes of patients preparing for hip and knee replacement surgery. 

Through a combination of patient education and personalised health coaching we have shown how the Surgery Hero programme empowers patients to make lifestyle changes, leading to enhanced surgical results and an improved overall patient journey.

Key Highlights:

🏨 Reduction in Length of Stay: The median length of stay has been reduced from 3 days to an impressive 2 days, enhancing patient recovery and bed availability.

💰 Cost Savings: An estimated cost-saving of £273 per patient has been realised, driven by the reduction in the average length of stay

😊 Patient Satisfaction: Our patients are at the heart of what we do. The study reveals an outstanding average patient satisfaction score of 9.3/10, reflecting the positive impact on the overall experience they had with us

🤓 Patient Activation: We're particularly proud of the statistically significant improvement in patients' knowledge, confidence, and skills in managing their own health. Empowering patients is key to achieving sustainable outcomes.

🌟 Tailored Benefits: Notably, higher-risk patients experienced a substantially greater benefit from participating in the program, emphasising the inclusivity and adaptability of our approach to health coaching

Exciting news! 🎉 

We're honoured to share that we've been chosen as finalists for the "Health Tech Case Study of The Year" at the 2024 Health Tech News Awards, in recognition of our successful collaboration with Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. 🤝 

Patients who were referred to Surgery Hero showed a reduction in length of stay in hospital and a substantial increase in patient activation levels 📈  In addition, out of 569 patients deemed "unfit for surgery", almost 58% were able to proceed with their elective surgery following engaging in the programme! 🏥

A special mention to Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust who collaborated with us to launch this project. We extend our congratulations to all those shortlisted for this award and best of luck to all nominations. 🤞

☀️🌙 Exercise in the morning or the evening - what’s best for our health? 

A recent study in the The Journal of Physiology has revealed that for some of us, the timing can impact the effectiveness of exercise on our health. 

The study focused on individuals with elevated risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

🔍 Key Findings:

🙌 Both times have benefits: exercising in the morning or afternoon/evening showed improvements in blood pressure 💓, body composition 📉 and respiratory fitness 

☀️ Early bird catches the worm: in this study, exercise in the morning vs the evening showed a greater reduction in blood pressure, decreased insulin resistance and improved metabolic health

🤔 Conclusion: the time of day we exercise might play a role in optimising health and performance outcomes. More research is starting to emerge to support the fact that morning exercise offers more advantages to our health. However, it’s important to consider our goals and lifestyle when scheduling in exercise!

At Surgery Hero we believe more movement in our day to day is ALWAYS better for our health regardless of the timing. The main focus in our coaching sessions is figuring out small, sustainable changes day to day to reduce sedentary time! 🤸
