We’re excited to announce completion of patient enrollment in our US-based COMMAND trial, which enrolled a total of six patients and is being conducted under the first investigational device exemption (IDE) awarded by the FDA to a company assessing a permanently implanted BCI. 🧠🧠🧠

The early feasibility study assesses safety while evaluating quantified efficacy measures of the Synchron Switch™ motor #neuroprosthesis in patients with severe paralysis.

Thank you to our clinical sites: Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, University at Buffalo Neurosurgery and UPMC, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University College of Engineering. The study is being conducted with support from the NIH BRAIN Initiative.

We are pleased to hear that Professor Nicholas Opie, a University of Melbourne professor and the founding director of brain interface platform  Synchron, has been awarded the Paul Shetler Disruptor of the Year Award at the InnovationAus 2023 Awards for Excellence for his pioneering work in neural interfaces.

Thanks Jim Hammerand, managing editor at Medical Design & Outsourcing for speaking with our CEO Thomas Oxley and dispelling some myths about #BCIs. 

The biggest BCI misconception is that a BCI to treat paralysis must restore the movement of a patient’s arm or leg, Oxley said. That might be the case one day, but for now Synchron is focused on a simpler task.

“What we’re focused on is building a control language that can lead to control of a range of things, which may include an arm or a leg or exoskeleton or prosthesis, but actually, in the first instance, is controlling smart devices — iPhones,” he said. 📱📱📱
