Chris comments on the significant acceleration and innovation that we’re seeing in science, and the translation of that science into new medicines. He also speaks on gene therapies, which have started to deliver transformational benefits for patients and even cures for previously uncurable diseases. Whilst John predicts that there will be a continued focus on exciting innovation for novel medicines targeting large disease populations of unmet need, such as in cardiovascular, metabolic and renal disease.

There’s a positive outlook for patient recruitment in the future with John predicting the increased personalisation seen in clinical trials in oncology will expand to other therapeutic areas. He cites his belief that the shift will be amplified by predictive analytics and AI tools which will further accelerate the recruitment and conduct of clinical trials.

Beacon Therapeutics presented 12-month data from its Phase II SKYLINE trial of its lead asset, AGTC-501, in XLRP at the Annual Macula Society Meeting, demonstrating encouraging efficacy and safety.
 
The presentation highlighted encouraging efficacy shown by improvements in retinal sensitivity, the primary endpoint for the trial, with a 63% response rate in the higher dose cohort. Beacon expects to announce longer term 24-month data from the trial in H2 CY2024.

Syncona portfolio company, Autolus Therapeutics today announced a Strategic Collaboration with BioNTech SE.
 
The Strategic Collaboration aims to advance both companies’ autologous CAR-T programmes towards commercialisation, pending regulatory authorisations. In connection with the collaboration, the companies entered into a license and option agreement and a securities purchase agreement, with BioNTech agreeing to purchase $200 million of Autolus’ American Depository Shares. In addition, BioNTech has made a cash payment of $50 million in return for access to a number of rights across Autolus’ pipeline.  

Autolus has also announced the pricing of its underwritten offering in the United States of 58,333,336 American Depositary Shares at a public offering price of $6.00 per ADS, for total gross proceeds of approximately $350 million.

Autolus is now well funded to deliver obe-cel’s path in relapsed/refractory adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and will be able to accelerate its oncology pipeline programmes to deliver its potentially transformational product to patients.

Today Syncona published its third quarter update. 
 
Against a continuing challenging market backdrop for biotech we reported net assets of £1,251.0 million, equivalent to 188.2p per share, representing a NAV per share return of 5.4% in the quarter and 0.9% in the nine months to 31 December 2023. 
 
The Syncona team continues to take proactive and decisive action across the portfolio to maximise value. As part of this focus on creating fundamental value, Syncona is prioritising capital allocation across the portfolio to enable delivery of key inflection points that it believes have the potential to drive access to capital and NAV growth.

Two Syncona portfolio companies, Autolus Therapeutics and Quell Therapeutics, have been featured in Labiotech.eu’s shortlist of UK #biotech companies to highlight.

Autolus is currently preparing for commercial launch having recently announced the acceptance of its Biologics License Application by the FDA for its lead programme in relapsed/refractory adult B-cell acute lymphoblastic #leukaemia. Quell is a Treg cell therapy company with a lead candidate in clinical development targeting the management of the body’s immune response to liver transplantation.
