The latest in cybersecurity threats are what's known as Adversary-in-the-Middle (AiTM) attacks. AiTM attacks are business email compromise (BEC) attacks, and they are even more clever than what we've seen in the past. These attacks provide a bypass to multifactor authentication (MFA), giving cybercriminals real access to your accounts using false premises. How do AiTM attacks work? Senior Systems Engineer and Principal Cybersecurity Consultant Lynne Caputi breaks it down in our latest blog. 1. They always start with an email. It looks like a legitimate request to verify your account with a link to click. 2. The link takes the victim to a forged replica site, seeking common credentials. 3. The entered credentials are captured by the attacker, and the user is forwarded to the real site! 4. The stolen session grants the attacked access to the account. These attacks are particularly nefarious, as the victim often doesn't realize they've been duped and all requests and logins appear legitimate. This scam has been used to steal access to Microsoft 365 accounts, so make sure you and your employees are wary of any emails requesting that they verify their Microsoft 365 accounts.
