TalkLife welcomes the UK government's intention to give mental health ‘the same focus and attention as physical health’, especially focusing on the mental health of children and young people. We also welcome the government's commitment to modernise the Mental Health Act, as parts of the existing legislation are over 40 years old. The hope is that people are treated with more dignity and respect when they are at their most unwell. Announced by the monarch in the House of Lords last week, the King’s Speech also pledges a new Children’s Wellbeing Bill as part of the Government’s plans for education reform. This promises to influence and strengthen the legislation around children’s wellbeing. We believe that mental health support is equally important from prevention through to crisis support. Our online peer support platform is accessible before a mental health issue is apparent, between therapy sessions, and to support keeping well/relapse prevention after any treatment. Peer support is based on the premise that the meaning of recovery can be different for everyone and that people can benefit tremendously from the sharing of experiences, being listened to and respected, being supported to find meaning in their experiences and a path to recovery that works for them, ultimately enabling them to lead a fulfilling and satisfying life (World Health Organisation) By creating a network of understanding and empathy, we can address mental health issues before they escalate, reducing the need for more intensive interventions. Integrating peer support into mental health strategy aligns with the goals of the new Mental Health Bill, by making mental health care more efficient and accessible for all. Today is the start of Loneliness Awareness Week and time to shed some light on an issue that impacts many, including students in our online community. Our recent impact survey revealed some startling statistics: 🎓81% of TalkCampus students often feel a lack of companionship 🎓83% feel left out 🎓82% feel isolated from others 🎓26% reported that they had not spoken to anyone face-to-face in the previous 24 hours These numbers represent real experiences and emotions students feel when facing the challenges of #university and #college life. Loneliness has not just an impact on mental and physical health, it has a direct negative effect on academic performance. But there’s hope! Our blog explores the various aspects of loneliness, offering insights and strategies to cope with difficult feelings, and how to create moments of connection and support others.
