Celebrating 99 years, we revisit pivotal moments in our History... Trace the evolution of the logo of TERAOKA! (1927-1957) “Terra” knife-edge design The history of the TERAOKA logo began in 1925 at Asahi Scale Manufacturing Co., Ltd., founded by its first president, Toyoharu Teraoka. This logo is a combination of an inverted triangle representing the fulcrum (knife edge) of a scale and typography that combines the Latin word terra, meaning "earth," "land," or "earth," with Teraoka's Tera, and was used in the English catalog for export. (1941-1985) "Teraoka" Weight Design Meanwhile, looking at the domestic market, a logo featuring a stylized weight has been used since the days of Teraoka Seikosho Co., Ltd. The weights used by money exchangers in the Edo period are said to have been modeled after silkworm cocoons, and this design was used on the signs of money exchangers. Teraoka Seikosho uses the design of this weight as a "symbol of a scale" and combines the characters "Teraoka" and "Tokyo" to create its logo. (1958-1985) "Teraoka-style scales" This logo was used for about 30 years from 1958 (Showa 33) with the aim of making "Scales = Teraoka" widely known and established. This logo was not used on products, but was used in conjunction with other logos in catalogs, newspaper and magazine advertisements, etc. It was also used on sales vehicles, making it a mobile billboard. Around 1976, the company changed its slogan from "Scales are Teraoka type" to "Scales are Teraoka" (1958-1985) Sori Yanagi Design ① Sori Yanagi (1915-2011) is said to be the designer who made the greatest contribution to the establishment and development of postwar Japanese industrial design. Yanagi has been involved in the design of Teraoka products since the 1950s, introducing scales such as the Pearl bottom-pan scale (the first in the industry to win the Good Design Award). (1969-1985) Sori Yanagi Design ② In 1969, 11 years after the typography logo, Yanagi created a logo with a balance scale motif. The logo, which Yanagi created with the idea of a new design suited to the times to come, features weights hanging on either side and the T for TERAOKA to represent a balance scale. It is a beautiful design that uses only simple elements to express the essence of the balance scale, or TERAOKA. (1986~) Birth of a new mark and logotype In 1986, TERAOKA introduced a new corporate identity, renewing the brand logotype and company name logo along with the Teraoka Green corporate symbol. The DIGI symbol logo for overseas markets was created with the same design. Some changes were made to the color and proportion in 2010, and these remain the same to this day. Celebrating 99 years, we revisit pivotal moments in our History... TERAOKA's iconic scale "Pearl" 1959 was a big year in the history of TERAOKA. The company launched the iconic "Pearl" scale, designed by Sori Yanagi. It completely changed the image of scales, and three years after its release, it won the Good Design Award. Beginning in 1959, the metric system was fully implemented in Japan The metric system was fully implemented on January 1st of the year Pearl was released. Before that, the mass unit called momme was commonly used (the weight of a 5 yen coin = one momme). After the metric system was implemented, all commercial scales were banned from using momme units and switched to grams. In accordance with the metric system, "Pearl" was designed from the beginning to display only grams. The implementation of the metric system was a great PR opportunity for TERAOKA. In addition to newspaper advertisements, we also held a parade. We put a giant model of "Pearl" on a truck and informed the people of Tokyo about the metric system. Its all because of this scale! ⇩⇩ 1925 - TERAOKA is founded 1973 - The "DIGI" (scale) was born, along with our Brand Name "DIGI", the electronic scale that changed the way we shop, was born in 1973. With its innovative T-shaped design, "DIGI" was the first to place the digital display at eye level, making it easy to read for both customers and cashiers - enabling retailers to sell face-to-face for a more personal sales experience. "DIGI" was truly an electronic scale designed for revolutionizing retail. It was compact and unobtrusive - the design took up half the space of conventional scales, freeing up valuable counter space for retailers. It was also accurate and reliable, making it ideal for weighing produce, meats, and other items in any situation - from large department stores to local independent stores.
