The failure of both Rex and Bonza this year shows just how hard it is to compete in the domestic airline industry. New data from the ACCC this week showed that airfares have significantly increased around Australia since Rex halted major operations in July. President-elect Donald Trump is a climate change denier who has promised to increase fossil fuel production and withdraw the US from the Paris climate deal, among other worrying pledges. But with so much momentum behind climate action worldwide, there's a lot of great progress he won't be able to get in the way of. Experts from UNSW give everyone who want a healthy planet some reasons for hope.

Authoritarian fossil fuel states keep hosting climate conferences – how do these regimes operate and what do they want? For the third year in a row, the United Nations Climate Change Conference will be hosted by an authoritarian state that sells fossil fuels. COP29 is currently being held in Baku, Azerbaijan. This trend means we have to pay extra attention to political influences on the talks and beware of greenwashing by the hosts. Evidence suggests as climate change intensifies, authoritarianism could gain legitimacy over liberal democratic norms. “You can change how you work and live now for a better old age.” That’s what Dr Shiori Shakuto of the University of Sydney learned after speaking to 100 “silver backpackers” in Japan, who embark on a journey of self-discovery a little later in life. Japanese retired men who led a work-oriented life struggled to find meaning at the initial stages of retirement. Their lives were characterised by boredom that led to a sense of isolation and low confidence. “Many older Japanese men I spoke to lament not having built a connection with their children or communities at a younger age,” writes Dr Shakuto. But for women, things looked very different. Even women who worked full-time seemed to maintain better connections with their family members and local communities than men. Do these stories feel familiar? Dr Shakuto says her findings can be translated into the experiences of anyone who spent excessive hours at work and those who spent more time cultivating relationships outside of work. While these relationship-building roles are not as valued as traditional workplace productivity, her research shows that it is the relational work that carries more value in old age.
