About the "how do I convince my boss to let me come to this conference" question. [Article published on LinkedIn by our conference chairman Michael Tsiappoutas, Ph.D., August 6, 2015] Some other conferences provide arguments that you can use to “convince” your boss to let you go to their event. One reaction to this line of thinking would be if your boss needs convincing, then the event is probably not worth going to. And yet others would say if your boss doesn't trust you enough to choose an event that will develop you according to company's goals, maybe you can clarify that with your management before choosing. Here's another way of looking at it. The split between practitioner presentations and vendor presentations (those related to a product or service provided by a vendor company) varies from conference to conference. Some conferences have 65% vendor and 35% practitioner presentations. Other conferences have less vendor and more practitioner presentations in their mix. Ours has only practitioner presentations. So maybe it's not about “convincing” your boss, but how your development aligns with company scope and how company recourses are allocated to maximize your impact to the company. In a simplistic model, if we wanted to address the situation above, we could ask this question: “Does my employer need me to keep up with the latest products and services provided by vendors or does my employer need me to develop my data science skills by gaining access to how other practitioners in the field tackle issues similar to mine?” But to make this model a little more realistic, think about how readily available and inexpensive the vendor information can be obtained (you can google what you need and more likely than not you will find many vendor providers that can give you and your team a free presentation), and how unavailable and expensive is the kind of information that could get you access to practitioner solutions (probably calling up a data scientist from another company to ask them how they dealt with a similar issue would be awkward!). And to add another dose of realism to our model, take a look at the agenda and see if the topics the practitioners talk about or the industries participating are of interest to you and your company goals. We feel that if you take the time to align your development to your company vision there is no need for “convincing.”

Conference or Expo? [Article published on LinkedIn by our conference chairman Michael Tsiappoutas, Ph.D., May 1st, 2015. As true then as it is now!] I am what you'd call a Data Science professional. My background is mainly in physics and engineering. When I used to go to physics conferences, it was all about the science. It was a place to meet the professor who wrote that textbook that kept you awake all these nights. Bounce ideas off of respectable professionals. Get cool ideas from others that you could really use. Ask the person who wrote an article about "your idea" how she came up with such a smart way of cracking the problem. And did she consider that other way of doing it, or did she not even think about it? Now I'm a business analytics professional. I don't get to go to conferences anymore. I go to Expos. It's all about listening to sponsor/vendor sales pitches or being chased down the hallway for your business card by recruiters. I miss my conferences. So I decided to do something about it. The Data Science Conference is the first and only Data Science conference for analytics professionals (predictive modelers, machine learners, artificial intelligence practitioners, data miners, computer scientists, big data analysts, and data scientists) that accepts no sponsorship and is not open to vendors or recruiters (in their capacity as such). It's an attempt to put "science" back into Data Science. The response I got from the Data Science community has been overwhelming. I confirmed all conference speakers in six (6) days. Data Scientists from across the country tell me how wonderful and needed this is. Who knew, sometimes just doing something about it just works out!
