Dami Hastrup founder of venture-backed MOONHUB, joined us at the start of our current 1000 Black Voices accelerator to share his experiences and provide advice on how to overcome the challenges Black founders face during the funding journey.

Black founders end up having to spend an inordinate amount of time, energy and effort getting to know how to navigate a fundraising journey that is fraught with bias. The reality is that "It is regular for Black founders to feel an excess amount of burnout while raising."

"It's definitely something to acknowledge, not allow yourself to be gaslighted into believing that this is normal... It shouldn't be this way."

"Building a network and getting to know other Black founders is really important, because you can lean on support and say, right, who can I trust in the VCscape to talk to, and what things did you learn through your journey that helped you".

Still, it's the feeling, awareness and experience of Black founders that they have to show up above and beyond founders of non-Black ethnicities and yet a mere 0.48% of investment capital in the US was allocated to Black Founders in 2023, according to Crunchbase https://lnkd.in/eAaATTVZ.

Dami also mentioned how diversity matters in the VCscape helping to open the door to funding. 

Yet here as well as with Black founders, there are the challenges of access. There is certainly a lack of diversity in this space. Less than 2% of the investment pool is managed by Black investors according to Geri Stengel Forbes. 

Thanks Dami for the raw conversations that help our founders to navigate an ecosystem that in general does not present an equitable investment vehicle. 

What's key to 1000 Black Voices engagement providing Black founders access to social and financial capital is empowering inclusive perspectives.

HR leaders agree that D&I are essential for enhancing business performance 🚀 

Research consistently shows that companies with greater gender and cultural diversity tend to be more profitable and productive. A survey found that 98% of HR leaders believe DEI is crucial to a company's overall strategy. Most HR leaders in the UK and US consider DEI to be very important (79%) or somewhat important (19%). Additionally, around 79% of these leaders reported having a C-Suite role dedicated to DEI.

HR leaders focus on improving DEI by establishing diverse hiring practices, providing DEI training, and creating DEI strategies with short and long-term goals. A large majority (86%) notice increased employee willingness to discuss DEI concerns, signalling its growing importance. Many already have (56%) or plan to implement (36%) supplier diversity strategies.
