Last week The Waste Transformers was invited by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development to speak in Cairo about the food waste situation in the Netherlands and on-site solutions for the Egyptian market. As still 56% of all waste in Egypt is organic, it is important this is treated right, allowing to create circular principles of reuse. In preparation of the 1st Asian Circular Economy Hotspot in 2025 in Taiwan, we took the Director General of the Resource Circulation Administration by the Ministry of Environment @Ying-Ying Lai, First Secretary Shengyu Chen and Hui-Ling (Shadow) Chen of Circular Taiwan Network to one of our Waste Transformer biodigesters. These circular hotspot events around the world help to promote sustainable practices and foster global cooperation shared by Holland Circular Hotspot . As Taiwan has implemented a community-based recycling program since 1997, this has helped push its resource recycling rate to above 58 percent at present. A great example for other nations. As in many other countries, in Egypt, 56% of the total waste generated is organic waste. Last week The Waste Transformers was invited by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development to speak in Cairo about the food waste situation in the Netherlands and on-site solutions for the Egyptian market. The market potential for waste management and recycling in Egypt is over $5 billion annually. This presents unique opportunities to shift Egyptian thinking towards circularity and use food waste as a source of energy, biofertilizers and job creation. Recycling of organic waste is not only an environmental imperative, it creates powerful economic opportunities, for waste management companies, municipalities and businesses. On stage, Coen Bakker provided insights into the problems solved with a Waste Transformer biodigester on-site and shed light on the costs of inaction around landfilled food waste. The Organic Waste to Value Forum in Cairo, hosted by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt and funded by RVO, served as the right platform where Egyptian and Dutch stakeholders came together. With key governmental organisations such as CLEIU وحدة الاستثمار البيئي والمناخي , the Egyptian Ministry of Environment , and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture , alongside financing partners such as AfricInvest Group and the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) , NGOs, and researchers the right connections were made. It was inspiring to speak with UNIDO Egypt on what concrete actions they take with food waste valorization and the intended use of on-site biodigesters in Egypt.
