Rachel Carson
Biologist - Conservationist - Environmentalist
 
Rachel Carson was a marine biologist, whose books advanced conservationism and the global environmental movement. As the youngest of three children, Rachel spent her childhood in nature, exploring the rolling hills and farm fields of western Pennsylvania. Inspired by the books of Beatrix Potter and lessons from her mother, a young Rachel began writing stories that often involved animals. Working for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, Rachel wrote scholarly radio shows, articles and essays that all helped educate the public of wildlife and the natural world. She then penned three books about the ocean ecosystems before turning her attention to the rising use of pesticides following World War II. Her monumental book, “Silent Spring” launched the environmental movement, spurring the passage of the Clean Air Act (1963), the Wilderness Act (1964), the National Environmental Policy Act (1969), the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act (both 1972); and led to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.

The Brothers Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Fehsenfeld family, assists the children of Heritage Group employees with the cost of higher education. Scholarships of $2,000 are awarded to select qualifying dependents of eligible employees and are renewable for up to three years:

Vera Rubin - Finding Something in Nothing
 
“Science is competitive, aggressive demanding. It is also imaginative, inspiring, uplifting.” 
 
From an early age, Vera Rubin developed a love of space by watching the night’s sky from her bedroom window. Encouraged by her father, young Vera built a crude telescope from cardboard and attended amateur astronomer meetings. After receiving a scholarship to Vassar College, the prestigious all-women’s school, Vera was the only astronomy major to graduate. From there, only the sky was the limit when it came to Vera’s steadfast determination to knockdown gender barriers in science. Working for the Carnegie Institution of Science, Vera unlocked observations about the scale of spiral galaxies such as Andromeda. It was through these observations that Vera discovered previously unknown and unseen forces at work throughout the universe: dark matter. While difficult to believe, since it does not interact with light or the electromagnetic field, dark matter comprises roughly 80% of the universe’s mass, despite being completely invisible. In recognition of her achievements, Vera was awarded the National Medal of Science and elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
