Today, Tradition Meets Future attended the French German Business Forum in Berlin. Concurrently, our CEO, Dr Sven Janssen, was quoted in a well-written article published by The Economist, comparing French and German economic policies. The article captures nicely some of the underlying currents that enable France to excel in several areas. Although one should be wary of believing that the grass is always greener on the other side, we share the Economists' analysis that “a country often criticised for its dirigisme seems to have found a way to use its centralised institutional structures not to control things but to support private-sector firms, lure investors and nurture entrepreneurs.” With regard to the start-up scene, Sven correctly pointed out that “France is now better than Germany at using state policies to support the market economy as Emmanuel Macron understands the promotion of innovation and start-ups.” As Tradition Meets Future has recently launched its operations in France - albeit not in Paris, but in the somewhat forgotten agglomération de Sophia Antipolis, Europe's first technology hub, - our anecdotal observation is that decision-making in France, a country not suffering from German Angst, appears a little bolder and therefore faster. The discussions at today's French-German Business Forum suggested that if things are starting to move in Germany, it may indeed stem from nudges west of the Rhine - as we all know too well: if we don't hang together, we will hang separately, alors, let’s move on.
