We were lucky to host Nikhil Krishnan – creator (and self-professed thinkboi) behind Out-of-Pocket, one of healthcare’s spiciest and smartest newsletters – at our All Hands this week! 

We picked his brain on the craziness of 2023 in healthcare, his POV on AI, and what he’s paying attention to as we head into a new year. A few lessons learned: 

🤖 AI’s impact on the industry is a bit of a mixed bag. The first wave was about making processes faster; the next might be existing companies building new, exciting features, but are those standalone companies? Probably not. 

⬇ Too many value-based care experiments are top-down – we hear from the government, from providers, from clinicians about how things are going, but not the patients themselves! If the patient was bought in, maybe that would change the feasibility of VBC. 

💰 Making fee for service better may actually be a good way to give more options to patients – giving them services they need, whenever they need them.

This #NationalCaregiversMonth, we’re recognizing the hard work and heart our nation’s caregivers bring to their loved ones every day – but it’s important to remember the challenges they’re up against. 

53 million unpaid adult American caregivers spend on average 23.7 hours a week providing care, equalling a staggering $600 billion in free labor annually. According to Tomorrow Health research, 60% of them report experiencing delays or disruptions in care that kept their patients from receiving medical equipment or supplies – and 58% said receiving unreliable or poor-quality medical supplies has negatively impacted either their lives or the lives of their patients. 

The time is now to create a more seamless, more supportive experience for our caregivers and their loved ones – everyone deserves that.
