"Confronting a dangerous shift": It was an honour to be invited by EPFIF last Tuesday to explain Triodos Investment Management's position as to why the #defenseindustry should remain off-limits for investors.
- While #pensionsfunds are currently confronted with pressing calls to increase investments in the defense industry, the question must be asked what investments are actually needed, and where? 
- Showcasing that investing in defense stocks is fundamentally different from investing in (inter)national security, that global military expenditure peaked in 2022 (SIPRI), I argued that it is the role of democratic governments to use their various ways to raise capital for #nationalsecurity.
- In line with this, the Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad wrote the following day that the Dutch defense industry wants “orders” and “contracts” – so, will pension funds place direct orders with defense companies to increase the security of their pensioners, or leave this to the government and focus on long-term welfare goals for their stakeholders?

"When we imagine superheroes, a pension fund manager may not be the first to spring to mind. They don't wear capes. They can't fly. And they seem to spend a lot of time on Excel spreadsheets. Surreally, however, they are now the best-placed to make planet-saving decisions for both the environment and the society," writes Hadewych Kuiper in her latest column.

"After years of significantly investing in education, research, surveys, dialogues and data, pension managers are putting down capital. With the right investments, they can act as accelerators for much-needed innovation. [...] It gives me hope to see valued professionals using their skills and influence to steer us in the right direction. After all, our choices today are what will determine the planet and society of tomorrow. We are the decision-makers, investment managers and powerholders, it's up to us to create financially healthy pensions in a liveable world. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?"

In line with Triodos Bank’s science based target to reach net zero by 2035, investment analysts André d'Ursel, Lilia Feghiu and Luc van Haaren, CFA initiated a climate change engagement project with the goal to encourage companies in our Impact Equities and Bond portfolios to set science-based GHG emission targets, in line with the 1.5°C trajectory. 

"Our approach is two-fold", explains investment analyst André d'Ursel: "One, we focus on companies that are still in the early stages of establishing a climate change strategy. These companies can greatly improve their approach by setting targets that are science-based. Two, we focus on the highest emitters in our portfolio, as reducing emissions for this group can substantially and efficiently decrease the emission intensity of our portfolio."

📣 Yes! The deal is finally sealed! 💚

This morning the Nature Restoration Law was accepted by the Environment Council meeting at the EU. The law has been hard-fought, and different parts have been watered down significantly. However, it is a major milestone for restoring nature in the EU. At least 30% of habitats that fall under the law must be restored from poor to good condition by 2030 and 90% by 2050. 

❗ Now that the Nature Restoration Law is accepted, we can continue to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises. 

In the past period, Triodos Bank has been calling for the EU Nature Restoration Law. We recently signed the letter to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU to ensure the adoption of this crucial piece of legislation: https://lnkd.in/e-KJh2de
