Yesterday we were honoured to welcome Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell, and Australian Ambassador to China, H.E. Mr. Scott Dewar, to our Shanghai office. Their visit highlighted the progress and ongoing cooperation between the Australian and Chinese wine industries and support for an upcoming winemaker talent development and exchange program. They were joined by representatives from the China Alcoholic Drinks Association (CADA), and TWE strategic partner, COFCO. Driven by TWE, working closely with Australian Grape & Wine and CADA, this initiative is all about nurturing talent, inspiring knowledge exchange and driving meaningful progress across both countries. Backed by government, industry and academic institutions across both countries including the South Australian Government and COFCO, the program is another example of the strength of cooperation that will benefit the global wine industry.

Some of our Melbourne-based team recently spent their volunteer leave at Helping Hands Mission Inc. , an organisation dedicated to supporting hundreds of Victorian families each week through opportunity shops, emergency food and aid programs, a community dining room and an assisted volunteer scheme. The team spent the day sorting fresh produce and personal care items, pricing goods for the shop, and brainstorming ways to further support the community-focused organisation. It’s been one year since Sterling Vineyards, the only winery in the world accessible by aerial gondola, reopened its doors after damage sustained from the 2020 Glass Fire. Since then, the winery has received multiple winery experience awards and welcomed thousands of local and international guests who have enjoyed award-winning wines while taking in the spectacular views of Napa Valley. With sustainability top of mind, the winery planted drought-resistant plants, built a new underground water tank, and recently implemented an innovative keg program that has eliminated the use of 7,000 wine bottles annually. When we put a canopy over our 14-hectare planting of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the Barossa Valley last year as an adaptation to the changing climate, we weren’t sure what to expect. Fast forward one growing season and we’ve found that the grapes under the canopy consumed less water, ripened a little earlier and had more vibrant and intense colour than fruit harvested outside the canopy. During the frost event in South Australia a few weeks ago, we discovered another unexpected benefit: the canopy protected the grapes underneath from the impacts of frost.
