Hope is so often portrayed as poetic, beautiful, and shiny—which don’t get us wrong—it absolutely can be. But it’s also gritty. It is resilient. It is so, so defiant. It is the flower growing in the cracks of concrete. It is the thing that makes the impossible possible. It is sometimes the only anchor we have left in those dark moments. On this World Mental Health Day, we want to remind you that healing isn’t linear, and there is still hope in the valleys of this path. Hope has not abandoned you and it’s ok to lean on others to hold it for you in these heavy times. We’re here with support. Below you’ll find a letter from our Co-Executive Director, Lindsay Kolsch. Dear friends, I hope this message finds you well. We’re one day away from the end of Suicide Prevention Month but our work is far from over. In fact, the past few years our team has kept reminders around our office to stay in the mindset that suicide prevention is an everyday endeavor, a constant fight for our communities and it doesn’t obey calendars or the changing of the seasons. At lunchtime today, I found one of those reminders on the side of our break room fridge. Taped there to the side of the fridge is a little white note passed to us through the mail that says simply “Thank you for saving my life.” The truth is, I don’t know the person who wrote it. I don’t know all they survived or all they are still fighting against, or fighting for. But I do know that this small scrap of paper stays there for our team to see because it underscores in just six words why our work in mental health is so vital. This may be shocking to read, but if you’ve ever had a chance to receive mental health care then you may be one of the lucky few. 28 million Americans will not receive mental health care this year, and those who are searching and asking for help often are faced with not being able to afford care or not having access to care in their community. I believe we can change this narrative together. By investing in therapy dollars, we can create a network that makes accessing mental health support easier and more compassionate for everyone.
