Alongside researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley, Two Sigma’s Heather Miller has developed the first guide to emerging LLM abstractions. In addition to cataloging several LLM programming frameworks, the authors developed two novel systems of organizing and outlining the characteristics of the current landscape of frameworks and how they interact with and between large language models. 

The past two years have demonstrated that while LMs can be widely transformative, they carry inherent limitations in integrating seamlessly into larger program environments. These new organization systems will enable researchers and developers to quickly compare programming frameworks for language models, such as OpenAI and LangChain, against each other to understand which would best serve their project. This fall we hosted our fifth annual Two Sigma Open, an internal event made up of a series of workshops and hackathons that provides our software engineers the opportunity to sharpen their skills, engage with the open source community, and help support crucial but often under-resourced initiatives.

Earlier this month, Sumbo Ojikutu, CFA, CAIA, SVP, Strategy & Product Development, moderated a lively and wide-ranging conversation with Zia Williams, SVP, Investment Management Engineering at AFROTECH. 

Zia shared insights on what it’s like to work in engineering in quantitative finance, myths of being an engineer in finance, lessons learned from navigating careers across technology and finance as a black woman, and tips for talent looking to build a path in engineering, including the importance of sponsorship and mentorship and finding and building community.
