UnitedMasters is a new music industry alternative that provides independent artists with premium music distribution services, a suite of tools to help them directly connect with fans, and opportunities for unique partnerships with some of the world’s biggest brands including the NBA, Bose, and iHeart. 

UnitedMasters allows artists to easily distribute their music to all major streaming services. Distributed artists become eligible to participate in a variety of advertisements, brand partnerships and other promotions that earn them money and bring in new fans. UnitedMasters also provides artists access to their streaming and social data so they can gain insight into how to maximize fan engagement. The most promising artists on the platform unlock access to a bespoke suite of promotional services like playlist pitching, marketing, PR, and promotion. UnitedMasters aims to give artists the tools to operationalize their independence and maximize their creative and economic potential.

UnitedMasters was launched in 2017 by Translation founder and music industry veteran Steve Stoute with a $70 million Series A led by Google’s corporate umbrella Alphabet alongside prestigious venture firm Andreessen Horowitz and entertainment giant 21st Century Fox. Led by a team of executives, marketers, engineers, and storytellers with backgrounds from YouTube, Soundcloud, Pandora, Instagram, Dropbox, Complex, and Vice, the platform positions talent for mainstream impact while allowing them to maintain full ownership over their master recording rights.

During A2IM (American Association of Independent Music)'s Indie Week, our sync team invited music supervisors and members of the music community to enjoy performances by two of our most exciting sync artists. Shout out to Lena Adelman and Ben Morris for pulling everything together.

Two unique NYC-based acts headlined the night. First up was the eclectic jazz/soul trio of Julian Soto, Isaac Sleator, and Isaiah Barr (Onyx Collective, Food Records). Genre-bending artist Ernest Rareberrg then took the stage with a supporting ensemble dressed as nuns, monks, boxers, wrestlers, and a ballerina. We had a great time in #Cannes last week discussing the intricate decisions that shaped Chase's celebration of the global West African diaspora in its top-performing campaign, 'A Taste of West Africa.'

On the mics, we had:

In addition to discussing the campaign soundtrack (shout out to Mike Ladman for the music supervision on this one), the conversation delved into the importance of authenticity in advertising and brand campaigns. For the Chase spot, this meant casting talent with actual roots in West Africa who have a deep connection to Jollof rice, the pride of West African cuisine that features as the centerpiece of the story.

The campaign also highlights how the right artist can play a significant role beyond simply syncing their music. Not only did Nigerian Afrobeats producer and UnitedMasters Artist Partner Sarz soundtrack the campaign with his song "Happiness," but he also joined the cast of on-screen talent featured in the spot. This allowed the brand to harness the power of Sarz's fan community, which includes 4.3M monthly listeners on Spotify and led to Chase Sapphire's highest-performing Instagram post of all time.

Speaking about institutionalizing this practice, UnitedMasters' Chaucer Barnes explained that this opportunity is available to all brands that want to do the work. "You can find the very next Sarz that actually matches your ideal and what your cast is talking about by fishing in the exact same pools."

If you're a Dallas Cowboys fan, you probably already know the name BigXthaPlug. For those unfamiliar, last week, the rapper and UnitedMasters artist partner was named a member of XXL Magazine/xxlmag.com's 2024 Freshman Class, widely considered the standard bearer for what's hot and relevant in hip-hop each year.

We mention the Cowboys because the team played a pretty big role in the Texas rapper's ascent. In 2023, the NFL team made his hit song “Texas” their official hype song, playing it on the big screen at AT&T Stadium to thousands of rabid fans.

Other brands also contributed to BigX's rise, helping him reach millions of new fans by syncing his music in films and commercials. That list includes ESPN, which had BigX write the 2023 XFL theme song, and Warner Bros. Discovery, which placed his song "Beast Mode" in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. More recently, the National Basketball Association (NBA) included his hit song "Texas" on a promo hyping up the Dallas Mavericks during their finals run.

BigXthaPlug achieved all of this while independent.
