Universal Quantum is a Brighton-based firm founded by scientists from the University of Sussex. The company aims to build the first large-scale quantum computer, competing against tech giants to deliver a machine that solves problems beyond current super-computers.

Universal Quantum aims to build quantum computers that will solve some of humanity's most pressing problems in areas such as drug discovery and climate change; as well as shed light on its biggest scientific mysteries. To achieve this, quantum computers with millions of qubits are required. This is often described as one of the biggest technology challenges of our time.

Universal Quantum has developed a unique modular architecture designed to tackle the qubit scaling challenge. Our trapped ion-based electronic quantum computing modules are manufactured using available silicon technology. These individual modules are then connected using our record-breaking UQ Connect technology to form an architecture that truly scales.

UQ’s 5th Anniversary: A Quantum Journey

We have come a long way since our founding in 2018. We developed our unique & record-breaking architecture, UQ Connect, to directly address the scaling challenge. We were also selected to partner with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to manufacture two quantum computers; one of the largest government contract for quantum computing to date.

Although other milestones could be listed, the fuel to our quantum quest is our rockstar team. These brilliant minds are the heartbeat of UQ; living and breathing our core values every single day. You are the real MVPs 🚀

November is the month when many men around the world grow a moustache to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. 

This year, we decided to join the Movember challenge and created a team of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas. Some of us grew moustaches, some of us did physical activities, and some of us donated to the cause. But we did it as a team and had some fun along the way.

I am thrilled to see the UK government’s announcement of a series of ambitious moonshot projects today, one of which is centered around the construction of a truly useful quantum computer. This underscores the significance of quantum computers and their potential to transform various fields. It also clearly shows the need for quantum computers to scale up dramatically to deliver this. The government’s aspiration is commendable, and I eagerly anticipate learning more about the additional measures that will be implemented to help turn this vision into reality.

The UK boasts a vibrant quantum computing ecosystem, and we, at Universal Quantum, are thrilled to contribute to this ambitious project. We are eager to leverage our expertise and resources to make this dream a reality.

UQ at Teen Tech Festival: Yesterday, we had an inspiring day at the Teen Tech Festival, where we had the opportunity to engage with over 300 young minds. This event was all about showcasing the future of technology and we were thrilled to be a part of it.

Quantum Hardware Engineering: A career that didn’t exist when most of us were in school, but today, we’re proud to say we have a team of Quantum Hardware Engineers at UQ. We were at the event sharing our passion and knowledge in the area with the next generation.

Inspiring the Future: Our team was there, not just to talk about what we do, but to inspire these young people about the endless possibilities that a career in science, technology, engineering and maths can offer in our rapidly evolving world.
