Jane Fonda has been an icon and activist for decades, and her presence on the picket lines—and at the microphone—energized her fellow actors during the pivotal SAG-AFTRA strike last year.

“The strike was very important because what was decided is going to determine a lot about whether anybody that’s not above the line—you know, not an A-list actor—can actually be a worker in the entertainment business and have a decent life, a middle-class life,” Fonda tells VF.

My latest for Vanity Fair is a stroll down memory lane with Tricia Romano talking about her fantastic new oral history of the Village Voice. (Hits shelves Tuesday.)

Fran Drescher has been president of SAG-AFTRA since 2021, but it was her tenacity and righteous anger at the studios during last year’s strike that solidified her icon status.

“Well, the world loves entertainment, but entertainment has to be for the viewers and not the shareholders—and therein lies the rub,” Drescher tells VF. 
“Once it becomes more about Wall Street than the people that are making it—and the collaborative art form that it must always remain—it becomes problematic and really, in my opinion, unsustainable. The pressure that these companies are put under to continually perform for the shareholders is completely unrealistic. And as a result of that, you end up finding ways to show profit that ultimately compromise the very people that are foundational to making the product.”

In secret undersea locations, America’s fleet of nuclear submarines silently prepares for possible superpower conflict. 

Beneath the sea, the nation’s stealth nuclear behemoths are intended to “preserve the peace”—and, in the event of strategic attack, to inflict destruction. “We are prepared to unleash hell,” Admiral William Houston tells VF, adding that, of course, “We never want to do it. Those sailors know if their weapon system is ever used, they are probably not coming home to their families. And so they take their business very, very seriously.”

Gaining unprecedented access to these rarely glimpsed vessels and their commanders, VF reports on the linchpin of the nation’s strategic arsenal.

What could Johnny Depp and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman possibly have in common? Plenty, as it turns out. 

Over the past year, Depp has spent more than seven weeks in Saudi Arabia, traversing the country by yacht and helicopter, and even flying to London and back on MBS’s personal 747. In that time, Depp and the crown prince have made “a genuine connection,” a friend of the actor tells VF. “It’s a shock to many of the people who know him, but it’s what happened.” Insiders say Depp is now weighing a seven-figure annual contract to promote Saudi Arabia’s cultural renaissance.

According to Nielsen, #SuperBowlLVIII averaged approximately 123.4 million viewers, making it the most-watched U.S. television broadcast since the moon landing. 

Yes, that's right: the Kansas City Chiefs' victory over the San Francisco 49ers was the biggest scheduled television event of every millennial and Zoomer's lifetime. The ratings, gathered across multiple platforms, primarily came from CBS, the network that aired the big game, as well as its streaming arm Paramount+. Additional Viacom stations, including Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports, and Univision, as well as NFL digital properties like NFL+, also factored into the 123.4 million number. In comparison, the moon landing scored approximately 150 million viewers when it aired on July 20, 1969, based on rough Nielsen ratings estimates.

Prepare to be changed for good. Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in this exclusive first look from #Wicked. Directed by Jon Chu, the highly anticipated film will arrive in theaters this Thanksgiving. 

Also starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, and Jeff Goldblum, the forthcoming film realizes the hallowed halls of Shiz University and the viridescent streets of Emerald City in the most opulent way possible. “Wicked on the biggest screen had the opportunity to be the grandest, most spectacular, epic musical experience of all time,” Chu tells VF. “It was just like, ‘Let’s put everything into this.’”

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo tell VF they’ve become inseparable friends while making the movie—matching ‘Wicked’ tattoos and all—and sound thrilled to be together again so soon after the shoot wrapped in January. “I actually told my mom I was really relieved we don’t have to miss each other that long,” says Grande.

We all know Truman Capote. But who, exactly, were his swans? 

The brilliant and troubled author of groundbreaking books like ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and ‘In Cold Blood’ has been the subject of multiple biopics. Today, Capote returns to the zeitgeist as the bleeding and bloated heart at the center of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series ‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.’ Portrayed by British actor Tom Hollander, Capote is at war with Manhattan’s elite—the “It” girls of his generation—after infiltrating their tightly guarded inner circle, then exposing their secrets in a salacious magazine story. Titled “La Côte Basque, 1965,” the piece was named after the chic restaurant the ladies would lunch in and was published in Esquire in November 1975.

“They were very soignée and very rich and also his best friends,” wrote Sam Kashner for VF in 2012’s “Capote’s Swan Dive.”
