Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) is an electric power transmission company that operates and maintains the electric grid in Vermont.

VELCO is Vermont’s statewide electric transmission provider whose sights are set on creating a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model. Formed in 1956 when local Vermont utilities established the nation’s first “transmission only” company to access clean hydro power from New York, VELCO remains unique in two important ways:

1. Our ownership comprises the state’s 17 distribution utilities and a public 
    benefits corporation; and, 
2. our for-profit status is structured to return cooperative-like value to our 
    owners, their customers, and every Vermonter.

VELCO’s system now includes: 740 miles of transmission lines; 55 substations, switching stations and terminal facilities; 13,000 acres of rights-of-way; a statewide emergency service radio system; and, a 1,600-mile fiber optic network that monitors and controls the electric system and helps to deliver broadband services to Vermonters.

Headquartered in Rutland, Vermont, VELCO employees strive to give Vermont’s utilities and their customers a reliable high-voltage grid, a strong unified voice on regional energy issues, and continued access to safe, reliable, cost-effective electricity.

Summer blooms are showing off today at our Pinnacle Ridge campus in Rutland 🌸 🌻

Daniel Kopin, VELCO's Manager of Innovation spent the week in Seattle at the IEEE Power & Energy Society's General Meeting.

Dan shared, "We are grateful for our use-inspired research partnership with Mads Rønne Almassalkhi, Amritanshu Pandey, and Samuel Chevalier at UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences to help ensure a more resilient, affordable, and sustainable transmission system!"

This morning, our AGILE (Advancing Grid Intelligence through Learning Experiences) interns visited our New Haven substation and the newly constructed backup operations and control center facility.

A big thank you to Andrew Boyle and Brett Wilhelm for being the best tour guides for the group.

It's hard to believe we're already over halfway through our summer AGILE program with these talented students.

We are thrilled to share that our Grid-Enhancing Data Analytics project proposal with Vermont Electric Cooperative, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences has been selected by the Office of Electricity to receive funding!

This project will provide direct operational benefits to Vermont Electric Cooperative and VELCO by increasing operational flexibility, reducing outages, and improving quality of electric service in underserved communities within Vermont.
