Two Brandon Hire Station apprentices have been recognised as rising stars at the CPA Star of the Future Awards. 

Luke Piggott (left) won Highly Commended for Plant Mechanic of the Year and Thomas Fuentes Moreno (right), was Highly Commended for Plant Technician of the Year. Luke and Thomas both attend Myerscough College. 
The CPA is the leading trade association for the construction plant sector in the UK, with over 1,900 members who supply around 85% of hired plant to the construction industry.

Almost 300 people attended the awards ceremony at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre near Coventry. Nominations were judged by a group of judges from the CPA and across the industry.

People who don’t have access online access will benefit after Vp Group donated hundreds of digital devices to North Yorkshire Council's Reboot scheme. 

Reboot North Yorkshire is a collaborative project led and coordinated by North Yorkshire County Council. It brings together partners and community organisations across the county - including businesses, libraries, schools, local charities and volunteers – to help provide people across North Yorkshire with IT equipment and access to the internet so they can stay connected.

As part of the scheme, unwanted devices are delivered to community drop-off points or participating libraries, refurbished and then donated to those who need them via a referral scheme. These devices can help children access online school lessons or homework, families organise their lives and socially isolated or older people stay in touch with services, friends and family.  

Ellie Rose, Vp’s Group Sustainability Officer, said: “We had quite a large number of tablets that we no longer required. We wanted them to be put to good use because while we no longer have a need for them, they are still in good working order. It felt right that whoever we donated to should be near to our head office. We checked online and discovered the Reboot North Yorkshire scheme.”

 “We think it is important to acknowledge the opportunity we as a company have. We could send the items to be recycled and potentially make some money from them, but we didn’t want to. When we are in a position where we can help, we think it is important that we do,” she said.

“I think we often take the ability to connect to the internet for granted. We possibly don’t realise just how much we use it in our everyday lives and how many barriers there are for some. Hopefully, this donation can help.”
