Treatments Show Promising Results for Diabetes-Related Eye Diseases “We have many drugs that can cause a significant two-step improvement in DRSS,” said Richard F. Spaide, MD, an ophthalmologist with Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York. “The problem was the treatment did not cause an improvement in visual function,” said Dr. Spaide. “Up until now, the change in DRSS by itself was not enough to garner FDA approval. The recent approval of drugs causing complement inhibition in the treatment of geographic atrophy may have indicated a change in philosophy at the FDA. These drugs were approved even though patients did not show any functional benefits, and we do not treat patients unless they have some functional benefit,” he said.
